Georgia scored 35 second-quarter points and was never challenged in dispatching Idaho St. 55-7 Saturday in Athens. The Bulldogs scored more than 30 points for the fifth straight game, a new school record. Mark Richt’s squad scored 41 against Tennessee, 43 vs Vandy, 44 vs Kentucky, 31 vs Florida and 55 today.
“We did a nice job today,” explained Richt. “We started off a little slow offensively, but the defense did a good job of making plays. We had a pick-six and another interception, and after that, the offense got into the flow. The defense and special teams really did ignite this thing today.”
The easy win was exactly what the Bulldogs needed after last week’s heart-breaking loss to hated Florida. Despite struggling to score touchdowns in the first quarter, the Dawgs notched five of them in the second. Caleb King hit pay dirt early in the second on a three-yard run and was followed about a minute later by Bacarri Rambo, who returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. AJ Green then caught two scores from Aaron Murray in a five-minute span before Bruce Figgins received a scoring toss from Murray 1:01 prior to the half.
At that time, the score became 41-0 and the rout was on.
Murray had another efficient day at the office, completing 19 of 27 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Backup quarterback Hutson Mason came on in the third quarter for Murray and completed 3 of 8 passes for 41 yards.
The Georgia defense had two picks 6′s today. It is the first time that has happened since the 2008 LSU game. After Rambo’s second-quarter score, Vance Cuff returned a Kyle Morris pass 30 yards for another defensive touchdown.
The Dawgs will travel to No. 2 Auburn next Saturday to renew the Deep South’s oldest rivalry.
“We’re excited about the game with Auburn,” said Richt. “Every man on the team, I’m sure even before the clock hit zeros, was thinking about going to Auburn and playing this game. We want the opportunity to play the No. 1 or No. 2 team in the country. I hope they get voted No. 1. I would love to play a No. 1.”
Georgia has won the past four between the two.
