Three tailbacks score as Jaguars shut out McNair

Despite a depleted secondary, the defense played well enough to blank the McNair Mustangs 21-0 in the season opener for the football team. Running back Jared Pollard got the scoring started for the Jaguars with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, putting Stephenson up 7-0. Running backs Raymond Sanders and Denzell Hartley later added scores of 46 and 17 yards, respectively. Linebacker Tyrone Cornelius and defensive back Chris Sharpe each had interceptions to end Mustang scoring threats. The defense played with four new starters in the secondary, as the four players originally slated to start were all out with injuries. “They hit a lot of passes on us,” said Stephenson head coach Ron Gartrell. “We’ve got to get some of these injured guys back and keep moving forward.” The Jaguars play Columbia at Hallford Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. … Head coach Cassandra Woods’s volleyball team visits Redan on Saturday to face the Raiders, Warner Robins and Northside-Warner Robins. … On Wednesday, the softball team will play its first game in a week when it visits Greenbrier.
