The Lady Owls Homecoming match drew an Owl’s home soccer attendance record of 1,310 fans and also included the first ever overtime match between Mercer and Kennesaw State Lady’s soccer. The Bears would go on to play spoiler in the Homecoming match and defeated the Lady Owls in dramatic fashion. Sarah Elliot nailed a last-second shot past senior goalkeeper Staci Pugh for the winning goal in overtime. Mercer was awarded a free kick with five seconds left in overtime and Elliot put the ball in the net with one second remaining. The loss drops Kennesaw State to the No. 4 seed in the 2010 Atlanta Sun Conference Tournament and will host either East Tennessee State or Stetson in the first round on Saturday Oct. 30. With the win Mercer locked in the No. 2 seed and a first round bye. Although upset about the loss Lady Owls Head Coach Rob King showed optimism for his team.
“It was a good match, unfortunately someone had to lose, and it was definitely a tough way to end the game,” said King. “We will live to fight another week though, and we will put this one behind us and get ready for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.”
Junior Mackenzie Swindall became the first tennis player in KSU history to advance out of the first round of the ITA Regional tournament main draw with an upset over Georgia Southern’s Ali Beavers. The ITA is one the most distinguished tournaments of the fall season and is a huge boost to the team that Swindall was able to advance. Head coach Olga Elkin was throughly impressed from Swindall’s match play.
“Mackenzie played the best match of her fall season today,” said Elkin. “We are all so proud of the way she handled herself out there today.”
Swindall would go on to lose to 14th-seed Jillian O’Neil in the round of 32, who was the No. 1 player in the junior college ranks last season.
