Four top 2A baseball teams looking for first-ever state title

As the 2025 regular season enters its final stages, a group of 2A teams have positioned themselves at the top of the class. A group of four teams in Morgan County, Rockmart, Franklin County, and Pierce County, which have consistently won big games and remained at the top of the rankings all season. Each of the four is looking for its first championship.

Morgan County, the top-ranked team in 2A, has been dominant this season. Sitting at 21-2, the Bulldogs are undefeated against in-state teams, with their two losses coming to two top-15 teams in Alabama, and in the case of Hewitt-Trussville, a top-10 team in the country. Morgan County has never won a baseball championship before, though with the way the Bulldogs have dominated region play, this year may be their first. Through nine games of region play, the Bulldogs have outscored the trio of Rutland, Jackson, and Pike County 90-10, a number impressive regardless of the quality of opponent.

Rockmart is another team looking for its first title. The Yellowjackets have been close to a championship for years. Last year, Rockmart lost to eventual champion North Cobb Christian in the semifinals. They are only seven years removed from a finals appearance that saw them come close to a championship, winning game one against Jeff Davis 4-1 and losing the next two games by a total of four runs. This year, while not as dominant as Morgan County, they still sit at a strong 17-5, having won both games against region rival, and the team that ended their season last year, North Cobb Christian.

With six games left in the season, Franklin County has dominated the majority of its schedule. The Lions are 18-4 on the season and have only lost to some of the top teams in the state. The three teams they’ve lost to are a combined 54-17 on the season. They’ve also defeated some high-end teams, including three of the best in the state in Grayson, Pope, and Prince Avenue Christian. Franklin County looks like it has a real chance at its first championship.

Pierce County wrapped up its region play with five games left. The Bears stand at 18-5 and are currently second in the Region 3 standings. Outside of two games against Appling County, they have dominated region play. The team has been a high-end contender since the 2021 season, making the second round of the playoffs in all but one season. The last five games against Long County (2 games), Washington County, and Coffee (2 games), while not having a major impact on the team’s playoff seeding, will help the Bears prepare for the postseason against formidable teams with winning records.
