The Putnam County boys basketball team is off to their best start in school history as the War Eagles have started a perfect 16-0. Last season, Putnam was a perfect 7-0, before finishing the season with a 16-10 record.
With already as many wins as last season through 10 less games, the War Eagles will be a team to watch out for as the high school basketball season progresses.
Putnam is ranked atop the Score Atlanta Boys Basketball Rankings at No. 1 and is averaging just over 75 points per game while the War Eagles have let up only a little over 54 points per game, showcasing their ability to score while also doing their job on the defensive side of the ball.
The War Eagles are winning games by an average of over 21 points including having won three games by over 30 points including a 32-point win over Laney, a 40-point victory over Greene County and a whopping 56-point victory over the Utopian Academy for the Arts. In its 16-games streak, the War Eagles have won every game by double-digits except for one, when they played at Laney in the beginning of December and won by nine points.
Putnam County is led by junior guard Jamari Greene who has put on a show for the War Eagles thus far into the season. The junior point guard averages just about 18 points per game on 49% shooting from the field, giving his team an efficient option at one of the most important positions on the court.
Along with Greene, the upperclassmen for the War Eagles have been massive contributors to the team’s success so far this season. Junior small forward Zay Hargrove has been another solid option for the War Eagles shooting a team-high 53% from the field, averaging around seven points per game. Junior point guard Tamaud Woodson is second on the team in most points per game, averaging around 11 on the season to go along with four rebounds per game. The guard play for the War Eagles is rounded out with senior guard Jaylin Harper who has been a key factor in distributing the basketball and finding the open man when on the court, averaging a team-high six assists per game.
With eight games left on the schedule, the War Eagles have the chance to close out the regular season undefeated for the first time in school history, and look to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
