A look at some of the best basketball talent in the state

Georgia is one of the best states in the country for producing high school talent on the hardwood. It seems like every year, there’s a lottery pick in the NBA Draft who spent their prep years in Georgia.

The 2023 class produced Stephon Castle who went in the lottery. Castle was drafted No. 4 overall by the San Antonio Spurs after winning a national championship with UConn in his lone season with the Huskies. Isaiah Collier was the No. 1 player in the country in the 2023 class and was drafted No. 29 by the Utah Jazz. The Jazz also selected former 5-star prospect Walker Kessler (Woodward) who played college ball at Auburn with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Kessler is considered one of the best big men in the National Basketball Association.

The best recruit in the state of Georgia currently is Caleb Wilson. He is ranked as the No. 1 player in Georgia, No. 4 PF, and the No. 8 player in the country, according to 247Sports. The 5-star prospect is an elite two-way big man. Wilson is one of those rare players that can affect the game without scoring or dominating the basketball. On defense he is an elite prospect capable of guarding one through five and also putting a lid on the rim with high intensity and defensive pressure. Over the holidays, he posted a 20-point, 20-rebound effort to go along with seven assists and six blocks in a win over Hot Springs. He is also currently on the Naismith Player of the Year watch list which is awarded to the best player in the country. He is currently one of the few elite players unsigned but has a top five that includes Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio State, North Carolina, and Central Florida.

Grayson forward Jacob Wilkins is the No. 4 recruit in the state and is a high flyer, a highlight reel waiting to happen, much like his father who is former Atlanta Hawks great and NBA legend Dominique Wilkins. He is a long, rangy defender who guards the perimeter at an elite level. Wilkins is currently signed with the Georgia Bulldogs and is one of the best prospects in the country.

Wheeler PF Tylis Jordan is ranked as the No. 7 player in the state, the No. 12 PF, and No. 67 player nationally. Jordan is an elite finisher around the rim and one of the better shot blockers in the state. He’s continued to add to his game and joined an elite roster after transferring over from Shiloh in the offseason and has been a terror on both ends of the floor for the Wildcats.

Woodward Academy CG Zac Foster is a three-level scorer that can pull up from anywhere on the court. Score Atlanta’s Najeh Wilkins got the chance to see him during the summer AAU circuit where “he was unstoppable going against some of the top talent in the country.” Foster makes Woodward Academy a favorite to win a state championship in 5A this season. The 4-star prospect is currently committed to the Clemson Tigers and is averaging 16.3 PPG in his senior season with the War Eagles.

Riverwood G JR Leonard is one of the most gifted scorers in this class. He is one of those rare players that, when he gets hot, he is tough to slow down. He is ranked as the No. 12 player in the state, No. 22 SG, and the No.115 player nationally. Leonard is a three-level scorer who can take and hit difficult shots from anywhere on the floor. That was on full display when he was featured on the Peachtree Sports Network when Riverwood took on McEachern. Leonard did all he could to lead his team to victory but came up just short. He is another prospect who could potentially lead his team to a state title. The Stetson-commit led the Raiders to their first-ever state title in 2024.

The Class of 2026 is also loaded with talent starting with Grayson G Caleb Holt (considered the best guard in the country), Tri-Cities PF Jalan Wingfield, Cedar Grove SF Manny Green, Wheeler SF Colben Landrew, and Norcross SF Jaron Saulsberry.
