Melanie Thompson spikes a path to volleyball victory

The Broncos football team faced off against Cobb power Walton in the Kell Powerade Classic in the Georgia Dome. The running game was able to get off thanks to Alabama-bound Kellen Williams clearing holes on the offensive line for junior Marvis Lane. Sophomore quarterback Ben McLane helped the team rally as well, but the Broncos fell 14-9. On the defensive side of the ball, linebackers Chris Martin and David Cooper were strong. Safety Wade Brogden will also serve as the placekicker this year and he booted a field goal in the game.  The Broncos next play North Gwinnett on Friday. … The volleyball team impressed by winning two of three matches last Tuesday, as the team bettered Duluth and Norcross but was swept by Lassiter. Abby Chase’s 50 assists and Melanie Thompson’s eight aces sparked the Broncos. The team then swept South Gwinnett 2-0 (25-18, 25-10). … The softball team climbed to only one game below .500 with a huge 3-2 win over Kennesaw Mountain last Wednesday. Chelsea Hawkins had two hits and three RBIs, and Jessica Neidigh scored twice in the win.
