Lovett Basketball Delivers Notable Performances & Cameron Cannon Making A Name For Himself

Lovett Basketball caps an exciting weekend with thrilling finishes in two marquee events.

Lovett was featured in the second annual Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Basketball Classic and delivered a great finish against King’s Ridge. After controlling the majority of the game, King’s Ridge made a run making the game more interesting but Lovett was able to hold on in the win. The Lions’ defense was one of the standouts in the win with so many turnovers and steals they forced pushing constantly in transition getting easy buckets at the cup. The Lions had three players hit double-figures Cameron Cannon, Ryan Cain, and Landyn Murphy. Murphy nearly finished with a double-double posting 11 points and eight assists.

Cannon was the most impressive player in the 56-50 win, winning MVP honors for his performance. The sophomore guard finished with 15 points, three steals, and a block to lead the Lions. He was impressive with his ability to stretch the defense with his three-point shot and his constant account on the perimeter. When he wasn’t scoring, Cannon probed in the lane collapsing the defense and found his open teammates. His defensive performance was also something that caught your eye when watching him. He was a pest early and often. It led to him being in his first-ever postgame interview with his head coach Mike Harner who raved about his play.

Cannon followed up a stellar effort in the Corky Kell and delivered against Dacula in a back-and-forth contest that came down to the final seconds. Cannon scored 29 points and had three assists and two steals. His most important shot delivered the Lions to a win over the Falcons in dramatic fashion. The defensive pressure was on. Cannon was able to free himself up and just as he passed half court he launched a deep three-pointer with two defenders barreling in on him. The buzzer went off right after he launched the shot and all you could hear was the swoosh of the net as it went in. His teammates rallied around him after the game-winner.

Cannon showed he is a guard to know here in the peach state and is making quite a name for himself as a sophomore. It was a big weekend for him as he won MVP in a state-wide televised game and delivered an epic game-winner. The sophomore guard has also increased his average from 14.3 to 15.2 over the weekend. Lovett is known for producing stellar guards in the program. You may remember a few years ago the Lions had four-star combo guard Christian Anderson for a few seasons before he transferred out of state. Anderson ended up at Texas Tech and is having a great freshman season thus far. Lovett very well may have their next dominant guard to come through the program in Cannon.

Lovett has improved to 9-4 on the season and is 3-1 in Region 5-2A. The Lions have now won three consecutive games and will be back in action on December 30th against Hart County.
