GPB Games of the Week: Pope at Kell, Valdosta at M.L. King

GPB will broadcast two games this week, one on Friday and a second on Saturday. The Friday matchup will feature the No. 5 team in Class 4A the Kell Longhorns as they welcome the Pope Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds come in to the contest with some confidence after knocking off a highly-touted Kennesaw Mountain squad. The defense has performed very well this season limiting opponents to seven points or less on two occasions in only three tries.

The Greyhounds defense will be tested when Kell brings Score 44 RB/S Brian Randolph. Randolph came up big for Kell against East Paulding when he scored the game winning touchdown with 35 seconds left in the game on a 34 yard run. Head coach Derek Cook knows how big it is for his team to have a player like Randolph, telling the Marietta Daily Journal, “It’s nice to have someone like Brian Randolph on your team. He is a spectacular football player.” Pope features a member of the Score 44, OL Thomas O’Reilly.

Kell will be trying to continue its winning ways in the region after dispatching East Paulding in its first region game. This is Kell’s first season in the region after dropping to Class 4A from 5A.

Pope and Kell are very familiar with each other after facing off each of the last six years with Kell winning five of the six matchups, including the last five.

The Saturday game has no. 8 ranked Valdosta making a rare metro Atlanta trip when the Wildcats go to MLK to face the Lions. MLK will not fear facing a top ranked program after battling South Gwinnett down the wire in a 44-41 defeat and beating a ranked Collins Hill team 43-36.

MLK will rely heavily on the newest member of the Score 44, Demarco Robinson. The wide receiver already has 18 receptions for 465 yards and seven touchdowns. The Wildcats feature two members of the Score 44, TE Jay Rome and S Malcolm Mitchell.

This is only the second time these two schools have hooked up, the first being a second round playoff matchup in 2007 that MLK won 21-18.
