Breaking: Three-Star EDGE Zion Lawson Decommits From Vanderbilt

Three-star edge Zion Lawson from Maynard Jackson decommitted from Vanderbilt late Thursday evening. He explained his reason for why he made that choice.

“It’s just not the best fit for me right now as a player and student,” said Lawson.

He was committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores on June 1st. He committed the same weekend he took an official visit to Nashville. So, what is next for Lawson after his decommitment?

Expect for him to evaluate all of his options including his offers from Temple, Indiana, Wofford, Georgia State, and Vanderbilt.

He likes Georgia State and Auburn a good bit. Regarding Auburn, he is still building a relationship with the coaches. No official offer yet from the Tigers but Lawson has spoken to defensive end/edge coach Josh Aldridge a few times. With flip season (when a recruit decides to join another school after being committed to) going on there is nothing out of the question, especially programs sending more offers out. The Tigers will be one to monitor to see what they decide to do.

“I spoke to the coach twice before going down on the unofficial, but I definitely feel a bond could be built between us,” said Lawson.

A team to really watch is Georgia State. The Panthers are in a new era after the departure of Shawn Elliot who joined South Carolina to become their tight ends coach. Former Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee took over the program as a head coach and in year one has led Georgia State to a 2-2 record and an impressive victory over Vanderbilt who just beat the previous No. 1 team in the country. Another note is that the Georgia State campus is located only five minutes from the high school Lawson attends now at Maynard Jackson. Georgia State is located in the heart of Atlanta.

“What caught my eye the most about coach Dell McGee was the vision that he has for the program and it would feel great to stay home and play football for the home town,” said Lawson.

According to 247Sports Composite, Lawson is rated as the No. 103 EDGE, the No. 154 player in Georgia, and No. 1408 player nationally.

Lawson is having a good season on the field for Maynard Jackson who is off to their best start in program history after starting the season 5-1. He is recently coming off a shoulder injury that kept him out a few games but will make his return Friday against Forest Park in a pivotal region matchup.

“I’m very excited to return. I’m ready to use the new techniques I picked up while I was out two games.

The Jaguars will need him if they want to make their fifth consecutive playoff appearance. Lawson is focused on finishing the season strong and deciding where he will play at the next level.
