The rich only get richer as the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team land former Lanier and Tulane player Sion James, as he announced his commitment to play for Jon Scheyer and Duke basketball next season on Friday.
James had been a part of the Tulane men’s basketball program for the last four seasons, averaging a little over nine points per game to go along with close to five rebounds, and three assists all while shooting close to 47% from the field and over 34% from beyond the three point line. James has appeared in a total of 114 games for the Green Wave, starting in 107 of them during his career.
The Sugar Hill-native played his high school basketball at Lanier and was an integral part of the Longhorns program. As a senior, James played a large role in helping Lanier make it to the Class 6A state championship where he scored 26 points, pulled down eight rebounds and added five assists to his stat line. Lanier made the state championship game after going undefeated in the regular season. James was selected as a 6A Co-Player of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.

As a recruit coming out of Lanier, 247Sports had James rated as a 3-star, standing at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds.
After four years of college experience, now standing at 6-foot-5, 205-pounds, 247Sports rated James as a 4-star transfer that is ready to make an immediate impact on the already talented Duke roster.
James is the latest addition to the Blue Devils after Duke put together one of its most successful recruiting off seasons in recent memory highlighted by the No. 1 recruiting class in the country featuring four 5-stars and two 4-stars. The additions of Cooper Flagg (No. 1 overall recruit in the country), Khaman Maluach (No. 4 recruit), Isaiah Evans (No. 13 recruit), Kon Knueppel (No. 17 recruit), Patrick Ngongba II (No. 19 recruit) and Darren Harris (No. 37 recruit) all look to make a massive impact on the Duke roster alongside James.
James is coming off his most productive collegiate season where he averaged 14 points per game, over five rebounds and shot over 51% from the field for the Green Wave.
The addition of James to the Duke basketball rotation will give the Blue Devils a role player with plenty of collegiate experience. James’ ability to attack the basket and hit the open three from a spot-up shooting position will create numerous opportunities for the talented Duke roster coming to Durham this season.
