Former Lovett Lion, Ryan Mutombo, son of Dikembe, announces transfer from Georgetown to Georgia Tech

Former Lovett Lions basketball star and Georgetown Hoya center, Ryan Mutombo, has announced he is transferring to Georgia Tech to play for the Yellow Jackets for his senior season.

Mutombo is the son of NBA shot-blocking legend Dikembe Mutombo and resembles his fathers size, standing at 7-foot-2 and around 260-pounds. He followed in his father’s footsteps attending Georgetown, where his father was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year for the Hoyas.

Just confirmed with Georgetown transfer Ryan Mutombo, son of Dikembe, that he intends to transfer to Georgia Tech for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Ryan, a 7-foot-2 center, starred at Lovett School before playing the last three seasons for the Hoyas.

In high school at Lovett, he was named an All-State First Team by the Atlanta Journal Constitution as a senior. The year before during his junior season, Mutombo averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds and close to five blocks a game, dominating the Georgia high school basketball competition for the Lions. Overall in his career, Mutombo totaled over 1,500 points while playing for Lovett.

Mutombo committed to Georgetown after his senior year of high school and played in 27 games as a freshman for the Hoyas. He averaged five points and three rebounds in his first season of college basketball playing in the Big East. He recorded his first double-double against UMBC during his freshman season scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

His next two seasons with the Hoyas, Mutombo saw his role diminish, giving him a new start with the Yellow Jackets next fall when he will play for Damon Stoudamire and Georgia Tech.

Mutombo will look to contribute to a Georgia Tech team that finished thirteenth in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season, with an overall record of 14-18. Though their record wasn’t the most successful, Mutombo’s size and length should prove to be beneficial for the Yellow Jackets as they finished second in the conference in rebounding, averaging over 38 per game, only trailing North Carolina.
