Chattahoochee, Apple Mountain Golf Clubs welcome Class 6A state championship tournaments

The Class 6A golf season will end at two of the best courses in the northern part of the state when Chattahoochee Golf Club hosts the boys and Apple Mountain Golf Club plays host to the girls side of the class.

On the northern banks of Lake Lanier, Chattahoochee Golf Club was designed by legendary golf course guru Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1960 to supplement the need for a course near Gainesville. The course is now home to former Gainesville High-great and 1973 Masters champion Tommy Aaron.

“It was renovated a couple of years ago and went kind of back to the original route as far as the layout goes,” said Gainesville golf coach Jason DeJiacomo. “The teeth of the golf course are the greens. It’s an old-style golf course and everything kind of runs parallel and so there’s room to miss it. But the greens complexes require hitting the greens in the right sections.”

Chattahoochee plays 7,166 yards from the back tees and will challenge every club in the Class 6A boys golfer’s bag. The top 10 boys rankings are led by Creekview at No. 1 with Roswell, Johns Creek, Newnan and North Forsyth rounding out the top 5.

“The team I have seen really make a stride in the past few years is Johns Creek,” said DeJiacomo, who has high hopes for his No. 7-ranked Red Elephants boys team. “They really showed that at Area for us. I think they shot 20-under par or something like that. They will definitely a heavy contender.”

The girls will trek to Apple Mountain Golf Club near Clarksville. The course is not overly long, playing 6,428 yards from the back tees and 5,003 from the ladies tees, but it features elevation changes and relatively small greens to force quality shots from tee to green. But with a driver in the hand, Apple Mountain is somewhat forgiving.

“Apple Mountain is kind of the same thing,” DeJiacomo said. “You can almost hit it anywhere off the tee, to be honest. It’s forgiving but challenges you with the smaller greens. Now it does get a little tight on a few holes but if you can hit it and go find it, is how you can play from tee to green. The defense the course has are the greens. Some of them are small and some are really small and they have particular slopes to them and require attention to detail.”

The 6A girls standings are led by No. 1 Johns Creek with Blessed Trinity, Alpharetta, Tift County and Marist rounding out the top 5.

“My assumption would be that the girls would go for low numbers,” he said. “At Apple Mountain, if you get some girls really feeling it and stroking the golf ball, you have some girls who are really capable of going low in the 6A state tournament. It will be fun to watch, that’s for sure.”
