GACA expresses solidarity in opposition to June singing period proposal

The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association expressed its opposition to the proposed June signing day with a public statement on Thursday. Within the statement read several concerns if the earlier and third signing period was approved for the 2025 year and the GACA also emphasized the solidarity supporting their position.

“The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association would like to make a public statement in regards to the potential June signing period for high school football players. Navigating the current recruiting calendar is already a difficult task for High School Football Coaches in Georgia. The GACA is against a June signing period and fell it will cause more issues for high school programs and is not healthy for our game. A June signing period could lead to a large increase in kids re-classifying, which will cause a number of issues. We hope the decision makers will appreciate our concerns as a coach’s association in Georgia and that many other state associations share the same concerns about the June signing period.”

This issue arose earlier this month when the December signing period was moved up beginning the Wednesday after the end of the FBS regular season. The start of the traditional signing period will remain on the first Wednesday of February and continue to run through April 1. Additionally, the three-day early signing period will now start the Wednesday after Thanksgiving weekend (or Rivalry Week) when the major college football regular season ends.

Moving up the early signing period was done so the schools could get out in front of the transfer portal. And it was during this decision that the CCA tabled a separate proposal to open a three-day window beginning the last Wednesday in June. That signing period could open in 2025.

The CCA said it is still considering a proposal to add a third signing period for college football in June, starting in 2025.This decision will be made by this June, according to the CCA’s news release and that is why the GACA felt compelled to voice their position.
