In a season-opening road game against Cherokee last Friday, the football team defeated a young Warriors squad 24-7. Sequoyah quarterback Ben Rogers threw for two touchdowns on the night, and running back Kirk Medas ran for a 45-yard score in the second quarter. Placekicker Brett Snyder added a 19-yard field goal before halftime to give the Chiefs a 24-0 lead at the break. The Sequoyah defensive line played an excellent game and limited the Warriors’ offense all night. A Chiefs fumble in the second half directly led to Cherokee’s only points on the night. On Friday the team will host Creekview at 7:30 p.m. … The football program lost longtime defensive coordinator Ray Face to liver cancer in June. Face had served eight years as DC under head coach Sid Maxwell, and was a respected figure in Cherokee County football, also serving in the same position at Woodstock. He was 61 years old. … The softball team had two contests rained out last week, and stood at 3-3 at press time. The program—state champion in 2006—has made the state playoffs 11 out of the last 12 years.
