The Mount Vernon School has announced that Terrence Edwards will become the schools new head football coach.
The new Mustangs head coach is taking over for Wayne Dabbs who was with the Mustang football program since 2015. The Mustangs finished Dabbs’ last season with an 8-4 record and a loss in the second round of the playoffs to Prince Avenue Christian.
“Mount Vernon Athletics is excited about the prospect of extending the success of the Football program, which has seen eight consecutive seasons of reaching the playoffs. We look forward to an exciting and prosperous journey under coach Edwards’ leadership,” Mount Vernon Athletic Director Brad Dehem said in the schools press release.

Edwards is no stranger to the gridiron.
In high school, the Tennile, Georgia-native played on both sides of the ball as a quarterback and a defensive back. In his time at Washington County, Edwards helped lead the Golden Hawks to three state championships, dominating the competition. Edwards was inducted as Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame as a first-ballot hall of famer two years ago.
The domination from Edwards extended to the collegiate level where he attended the University of Georgia and switched positions to wide receiver. Edwards played at Georgia from 1999-2002 and shattered the record books in Athens. He managed to bring in 204 receptions, 3093 yards and 30 touchdowns in his four year career, all current University of Georgia football records.
“Terrence got my attention with his work ethic,” former Georgia head coach Mark Richt told Mount Vernon. “Even when he was coached to give us more than what he had, he responded in a very positive way. When leaders give that kind of effort, it’s contagious. He was raised right by his family who have a strong reputation for their character.”
When his legendary college football career concluded, Edwards signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent. After a year with the Falcons, Edwards transitioned to the Canadian Football League where he was able to shine on the football field once again, playing in Canada from 2005-2013. Over the course of his time in the CFL, Edwards played for the Montreal Alouettes and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and totaled 508 catches for 7,637 yards and 47 touchdowns. Edwards was named to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame in 2017.
After his playing days, Edwards began to get into coaching by opening up “TE’s Wide Receiver Academy,” to help develop young talent across the state. He served as a offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for Pace Academy for six seasons before going to Milton as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. With Milton during last season, Edwards helped lead them to a 2023 7A state championship.
Edwards will look to lead the Mount Vernon football program to a ninth straight playoff appearance.
