GHSA executive director Dr. Ralph Swearngin and GHSF Daily co-founder Chip Saye is in studio tonight for the second edition of GPB Sports Central on Georgia Public Broadcasting. The 30-minute high school sports show airs on Channel 8 and GPB’s HD channel at 7:30 p.m. and re-airs on Friday at 11 p.m. and Saturday at noon. Saye chats with reporter Niki Noto about numerous subjects, including colleges recruiting players at such an early age.

The rest of the show includes:

  • Reporter Mark Harmon does an interview with Swearngin, who spoke about the role of his organization, the growing popularity of high school sports for boys and girls, the movement of athletes between high schools and the state football championships at the Georgia Dome.
  • Noto did a story on Carver-Columbus running back Isaiah Crowell, who some say may be the best running back in the state since Herschel Walker.
  • Host Gil Tyree did a piece on Diamond DeShields, who led Norcross to a Class AAAAA girls basketball championship as a freshman last season but now is tearing it up on the softball field.
  • Jon Nelson did a story on reigning Class A football champion Wilcox County and its highly ranked quarterback, Nick Marshall.
  • Statewide radio voice Tommy Palmer lets everyone know what is going on in the southern part of the state and feels the best region in Georgia is right there in Class A.
  • GPB Sports Central also takes a look at the high school football polls; features Falcons running back Michael Turner, who talked about his days as a high school player; and has an interesting piece from reporter Ashley Mengwasser, a former Buford cheerleader who dressed up in her old uniform and went to the Calhoun game (Buford beat Calhoun in last year’s state championship game).
