North Cobb earned the No. 1 seed in Tuesday’s pool play and defeated Marietta 32-16 in the championship to capture the ninth annual Corky Kell + Dave Hunter/Brent Key 7-on-7 Tournament. The Warriors cruised through the elimination bracket with a massive 33-10 win over River Ridge and a 27-10 win over Pope. In pool play, Centennial was the big surprise and went 4-0, including a win over Woodward Academy. Centennial went into the one-loss elimination tournament having given up only 66 points across four games. The Knights just missed the championship round with their first loss of the day against Meadowcreek, 25-21. Blessed Trinity had a strong showing before falling in a 15-14 loss to Douglas County in the final round before the quarterfinals. Marietta—who was one win away from becoming the first three-time champion of the 7-on-7 defeated Douglas County 21-11 in the semifinals and scored a 37-8 win over Carver-Atlanta in the quarterfinals.

Day 2 will resume Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. and Day 3 of the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter/Brent Key 7-on-7 Tournament action will be on Tuesday, June 20. North Cobb’s victory Day 1 showcased the Warriors’ potential heading into 2023 and head coach Shane Queen believes it was a good sign ahead of their stacked slate.

“Cedar Grove, who we beat in the semifinals, is one of the best teams in the state and they made us better, so did Marietta and our kids played their best games of the day late and that was the difference,” said Queen. “We have a tough stretch early on this year, we have Westlake, Buford and Milton and Marietta before we kickoff our first region game with Walton, but these kids are working hard and they have a chance to be special for sure.”
