FALCONS FLIGHT: Team cuts two, practices Sunday after preseason win

A win is always good for a team, whether it’s a preseason game or a regular season contest. The Falcons were able to come away with the 20-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, but were back to work on Sunday for two practices.

The Sunday morning practice consisted the team in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, and they worked on the two minute drill as well as third-and-short and goal-line situations.

“I thought it was a really good practice,” Falcons head coach Mike Smith said after practice. “Our guys came out and we wanted to get a little padded work in, even though we’re less than 48 hours from the end of our game. We got that for a couple of periods and then we took the pads off. I thought we got a lot accomplished in those first three periods.”

One of the things the Falcons wanted to do is continue to improve because despite getting the win, according to Smith, there were lot of mistakes that need to be corrected.

“We have just started to scratch the surface in terms of making the corrections,” Smith added. “We met this morning for about an hour and a half this morning with our players and we’ve probably didn’t get through half the tape.”

Defensive end Kroy Biermann played well, in the game on Friday, grabbing one sack and a forced fumble. But he made it crystal clear what he needs to work on the next couple of weeks.

“Everything,” Biermann said after the Sunday morning practice. “I just got to keep getting better.”

MAKING ROSTER MOVES…

The afternoon practice theme was the same as the morning, as the Falcons tried to get better in certain game situations. But the story of the afternoon had to be the roster moves that were made. Kicker Steve Hauschka and tight end Collin Peek were cut while they signed cornerback Gabe Derricks to the active roster. With the release of Hauschka, this could mean Matt Bryant will be the starter for the 2010 season.

“We felt good about how the competition in the kicking position was going,” Smith said after the afternoon session. “So we went ahead and made that move today.”

The addition of Derricks is questionable move by the Falcons due to the depth of the position, but Smith said he will not be the other addition the Falcons make to evaluate more talent.

“This time of the year as you get a game underneath your belt there could be other moves coming as well,” Smith said. “That is the nature of what happens here at training camp.”

MONDAY, MONDAY…

The Falcons had one last full team practice session before the New England Patriots come to town on Tuesday and there was a slew of news to come out of Flowery Branch.

First, wide receiver Harry Douglass, who has been practicing all throughout training camp but has not played in a scrimmage or a game, will make his return against the Patriots Thursday night. Douglass is coming off a major knee injury and is fighting for the No. 2 receiver spot.

Running back Jerious Norwood returned to practice as he is recovering from a hip flexor injury. There is no word if he will play on Thursday.

Dunta Robinson, Peria Jerry and Brian Williams will not see action on Thursday, but Smith hopes to have them back for the third preseason game which is at Miami on August 27.
