In Class 7A, three-time defending state champion Buford makes its debut at No. 1 after previously competing in Class 6A. The Wolves have won 13 state titles since 2001 and will be competing in the highest classification for the first time. Buford has scored victories over Milton, Newton, Archer and North Cobb over the past three years and have proven success against 7A opponents heading into 2022. Grayson comes in at No. 2 after making a run to last year’s state finals and North Cobb, Mill Creek and Brookwood round out the top 5—giving Gwinnett County four teams in the top 5. Colquitt County, defending state champion Collins Hill, Marietta, Walton and Class 7A newcomer Westlake complete the Week 1 poll.
Hughes debuts at No. 1 in Class 6A after reaching last year’s finals and narrowly falling to Buford 21-20. The Panthers are followed by No. 2 Lee County and No. 3 Rome. Roswell opens at No. 4 after moving down from Class 7A and Marist makes its debut at No. 5 after a successful run in Class 4A. Woodward Academy, Northside-Warner Robins, St. Pius, Blessed Trinity and Douglas County round out the rest of the poll and demonstrate the massive changes seen in Class 6A as a result of reclassification.
Two-time defending Class 5A state champion Warner Robins opens at No. 1 ahead of Creekside, Cartersville, Jefferson and Calhoun in a stacked top 5. Jones County, Ware County, Clarke Central, Coffee and Cambridge also earned slots in the initial poll.
Defending state champion Benedictine returns at No. 1 in Class 4A ahead of North Oconee, which made a run to last year’s state semifinals. Cedartown, Perry and Bainbridge round out the top 5. Additionally, Troup, Starr’s Mill, Burke County, defending Class A Private state champion Trinity Christian and Whitewater round out the poll.
Defending-champion Cedar Grove tops Class 3A with Crisp County, Carver-Atlanta, former 4A Carver-Columbus and Oconee County rounding the top 10. In Class 2A, Fitzgerald leads the way with new-look programs entering the class at the top. Former 3A teams Appling and Pierce County are at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively with former Class A Private teams ELCA (No. 4) and Fellowship Christian (No. 5) filling the top of the class.
In the newly minted Class A Division I, Brooks County is at the top and leads Rabun County, Prince Avenue Christian, Irwin County and Metter in the top 5. In Class A Division II, Macon County enters the season at the top and leads Wilcox County, Schley County, Turner County and Bowdon.
