PANTHER BEAT: Four Panthers honored

Four members of Georgia State’s inaugural football team have been named to the preseason “FCS All-Independent” team chosen by Phil Steele’s Preseason Magazine.

Center Ben Jacoby, guard Joseph Gilbert, linebacker Louie Muasau and cornerback Brent McClendon were honored by the annual publication.

Georgia State kicks off its inaugural season in just 55 days, when the Panthers host Shorter on Sept. 2 at the Georgia Dome in the first football game in school history. The Panthers open preseason practice Aug. 4.

Jacoby, a junior from Buford, Ga., is a transfer from Ball State, where he played two season before moving to Georgia State last fall. He was a member of the Cardinals’ 2008 squad that went 12-2 and participated in the GMAC Bowl.

Gilbert, a junior from Cartersville, Ga., is transferring from Georgia Tech, where he started 26 of the last 27 games and helped to pave the way for one of the nation’s most prolific rushing attacks. He will enroll in graduate school at Georgia State this fall and be eligible immediately with two seasons to play for the Panthers.

Muasau, a junior from Sierra Vista, Arizona, joined the GSU program in January from Phoenix College, along with his brother and fellow linebacker Jake.

McClendon, a sophomore from Atlanta’s Mays High School, joined the Georgia State program last fall. He is the son of former Georgia and Chicago Bears running back Willie McClendon.

Phil Steele’s preseason “All-Independent” team also includes players from Old Dominion, Savannah State, North Carolina Central and Lamar, all of whom are on Georgia State’s 2010 schedule.
