The Gwinnett Braves started slowly on their 11-game road trip by losing the first two games against Columbus. However, coming into Thursday’s action they are winners of four straight.
On Tuesday night, the G-Braves beat the Toledo Mud Hens, 7-3. First baseman Freddie Freeman led the team, going two-for-five with three RBIs and a home run. He already has seven hits with five RBIs and two homers on the trip.
Pitcher Ryne Reyneso had a sterling performance by out pitching Mud Hens starter Rick Porcello. He went five innings and struck out eight to match a career-high. It was Reyneso’s second win of the season.
Shortstop Diory Hernandez has broken out of his early doldrums and has his average up to .357. On the road-trip he is batting .388 with seven hits and three RBIs. He clearly has shown that he is no longer in his "spring training," as Dave Brundage remarked last week.
Craig Kimbrel has made four appearances since being sent down to Gwinnett. In those outings he has pitched four innings, allowing two hits and no runs. He picked up a save in the win over Columbus on Monday. "He’s going to get his work," Brundage said last week. So far on the road trip, Kimbrel is making the most of his work, striking out five batters in three innings.
Matt Young got a pleasant surprise when he was named player of the week, by the International League, for the week of June 21-27. He really did have an incredible week by batting .556 with 10 runs scored and an OBP of .600.
The G-Braves will continue against Toledo through July 2. Then they will travel to Durham for a three-game set with the Bulls before returning home on July 6.
