THRASHERS BEAT: Day 2 of draft nets two more trades, eight new players

The Atlanta Thrashers came into day two of the NHL entry draft with five draft picks to make. At the end of the day, they had eight new players. Trades with the New York Islanders and L.A. Kings made it happen, as the Thrash used picks received from the trades to draft four defensemen.

With their original picks, they added defenseman Julian Melchiori in the third round, left winger Ivan Telegin in the fourth round, goalie Fredrick Pettersson-Wenzel and right winger Yassin Cisse in the fifth round.

Melchiori had 23 points for the Newmarket Hurricanes of the Central Canadian Hockey League. He will play hockey for UMASS-Lowell next year.

Telegin, out of Russia, played for the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL last year and scored 26 goals. He was the runner-up for rookie of the year in the OHL.

Petersson-Wenzel has six shutouts for Almtuna of the Swedish junior league. The goalie out of Finland was the second-ranked goalie in Europe by Central Scouting Services.

Cisse had 13 goals and six assists for the USHL’s Des Moines Buccaneers. The right wing forward will play for Boston University next season.

Atlanta traded their 2011 fifth-round pick to New York in exchange for two sixth-round picks (155 and 160) this year. Those two turned out to be defenseman Kendal Mcfaull and center Tanner Lane.

Mcfaull spent last year with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League. He tallied 10 points as a defenseman. He still has room to grow at 18-years-old and 6’2" 190 lbs.

Lane is out of Detroit Lakes, Minn. In 26 games at Detroit Lakes High School, he had 90 points (49 points,41 assists). He should be ready in a few years after some time in the minors.

The Kings moved up 11 spots in the sixth-round from 169 to 158 and also gave the Thrashers their seventh-round selection (199). Atlanta took two defenseman with those picks in Sebastian Owuya and Peter Stoykewych.

Owuya is a 17-year-old out of Sweden and appeared in 60 games for the Timra Junior under-20 of the Swedish junior league last year.

Stoykewych, also 17, appeared in 56 games for Winnipeg South of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He will attend Colorado College next season.

It is not a certainty that any of these players will be in an Atlanta Thrashers uniform, but with the proper training, they could help the team out immensely.
