COBB BEAT, MAY 7-13: Raider tennis teams keep advancing; several track teams qualify for state meets

Despite the stormy weather across the south, high school state championships still continue across Georgia. While golf experienced some minor postponements, the competitions have thus far remained on going with still much more to come.


The boys and girls tennis championships are currently in progress. On the boys side, in Class 5A, Valdosta knocked off Pebblebrook 5-0 in the first round, while Kennesaw Mountain was defeated 3-0 by Brookwood. Wheeler took the loss to Northview, 3-0.
Several Cobb County schools did come through with wins, however. After earning the 3-0 victory over South Forsyth, Walton also disposed of Etowah 3-2 in the second round and is now set to take on Brookwood in the quarterfinals. North Cobb and Harrison were not as fortunate, however. After each team earned the first round victory, North Cobb was defeated 3-1 by Alpharetta while Harrison was defeated 3-0 by Northview in the next round.
In Class 4A, Hillgrove has been dominant in the championships thus far, disposing of Chamblee 3-1 in the first round before defeating Madison County by the same score in the second round. Sprayberry did not experience the same success, falling in the first round 3-0 to North Springs. The semifinals and finals for both regions will take place on May 7-8 at Clayton County International Park.
On the girl’s side, in Class 5A, Walton has been the most impressive so far, defeating Norcross 3-0 in the first round before defeating Marietta 3-0 in the second round. Kennesaw Mountain also competed, but fell 3-2 in the first round to Brookwood.
Hillgrove represented Cobb County on the girls side at the championships as well, defeating their first round opponent, Chamblee 3-1, before taking the loss to Heritage in the second round.
GIRLS TRACK MEET PREVIEW …
The Track and Field championships are set to kick off this week, with several Cobb County schools competing at the meet. Taking a look at the field of competitors from each team, Campbell will be represented by Angel Foster (400-meter relay), Brianna Chambers (400-meter relay, 1600-meter relay), Jasmyn Jackson (1600-meter relay), Kelli Hardnett (400-meter relay, 1600-meter relay, 200-meter dash), Kemjika Finebone (1600-meter Relay), Kyana White (1600-meter relay, 400-meter relay), Monti Willis (1600-meter relay), Rasha Frye (high jump), Shaina Walker (400-meter relay), and Tershauna Braudnax (400-meter relay). Harrison has just two competitors in the meet, with Kalee Isaacs competing in the 3200-meter run and Maria Boff representing the team in the 1600 meter.
In Region 6, Class 5A, Kell will be represented by Josephine Akinwumiju in the shot put, and Kendell Williams in the 300-meter low hurdles and the 100-meter intermediate hurdles. At Walton, Caroline Sullivan will compete in the 800-meter, while Mara Canning will represent the team in both the 800-meter and the 1600-meter run. Also in Region 6, Class 5A, Lassiter will have several competitors at the meet, including Cydnee Ayn Gordon (400-meter relay), Deidre Wilkes (400-meter relay), Emilie Moore (pole vault), Gabrielle Piper (400-meter relay, long jump, 100-meter dash, 100-meter intermediate hurdles), Julienne McKee (400-meter relay, long jump, triple jump), and Marshara Fross (400-meter relay), while Alisha Murray will represent Pebblebrook in the 200-meter dash. The final Region 6, Class 5A team from Cobb County at the competition will be Wheeler, who is represented by Asea Mayfield (1600-meter relay), Elizabeth Emoihe (1600-meter relay), Morgan Love (1600-meter relay), Netalie Anderson (1600-meter relay), Sam Kiblinger (1600-meter relay), and Sanita Siasia (400-meter dash, 1600-meter relay).
Meanwhile, in Region 5, Class 5A, Kennesaw Mountain will send several athletes to the championships, including Amber Hallman (shot put), Brook Colson (pole vault), Diana Levy (shot put and discus), and Ivana Osanyinbi (200-meter dash, triple jump and high jump). While at Marietta, several athletes qualified for the championships including Bre’anna Crockett (100-meter intermediate hurdles, 400-meter relay, 1600-meter relay), Ciera Echols (1600-meter relay, 400-meter relay), Kourtney Keller (400-meter relay, 1600-meter relay and 300-meter low hurdles), Kristiana Person (long jump, high jump, 1600-meter relay), and Whitney Stevenson (400-meter relay, 100-meter rash).
McEachern will not be without their share of competitors at the meet as well, and will be represented by Amber Brock (1600-meter relay and 400-meter relay), Amber Bryant-Brock (400-meter dash, 300-meter low hurdles), Ashley Gayle (400-meter relay, 200-meter dash, 1600-meter relay, 400-meter dash), Christoni Wynn (400-meter relay), Darnisha Stevenson (100-meter dash, 400-meter relay, 1600-meter relay, 100-meter intermediate hurdles), Ieska Jennings (1600-meter relay), Taylor Banks (1600-meter relay and 400-meter relay), and Zalisa Green (400-meter relay and 1600-meter relay). North Cobb will be sending only one competitor to the meet with Lauren Hutchinson competing in the pole vault.
In Region 4, Class 5A, Cobb County will be represented by Pope who will have two competitors at the meet including Monica Phillips in the discus and shot put, and Sarah Hutchinson in the triple jump.
