Milton Girls Lacrosse remains perfect on the season

In a true back-and-forth battle, the 13-0 Milton Eagles edged out the 14-1 Hillgrove Hawks 18-12. This game was a shootout from beginning to end, with the two teams combining for 16 goals in the first half, where the Eagles ended up leading 10-6 at halftime. They later combined for 14 goals in the second half, but the Eagles managed to score eight goals compared to the six for the Hawks to hold on for the win.

Some notable performers for the Eagles include senior attacker Maddie Dora, who had five goals and two assists; senior midfielder Brie Catts, who had three goals, two assists and six draw controls; and senior midfielder Skylar Carrasquillo, who had two goals, one assist and six draw controls.

With this win, the Eagles improve to 14-0 overall on the season and the Hawks drop to 14-2 on the season. Eagles head coach Tim Godby credits his team’s execution for their ability to pull out the tough win.

“They were good and making it tough on us to get things going offensively, but the girls were able to figure out how to get through their defense enough and get some goals and execute to help us win,” coach Godby said.

Godby sees this win as help to get his team prepared for the playoffs because it was a close game that the Eagles really had to claw out in order to get the win and remain perfect on the season.

“We really haven’t had a lot of close games this year, so we had to learn how to play when the pressure was on and be able to take care of the ball and execute and get some stops defensively and make a lot of adjustments throughout the game,” coach Godby said.

The Eagles are currently the No. 1 team in Area 2 of Class 6A-7A, which means that they are currently in the position to host a playoff game. Coach Godby believes that their path to the championship will be tough and he has one message for his team going into the tournament, where they could face the Hawks again sometime down the line.

“We just gotta be focused and execute, be focused on and off the field and execute during the game,” coach Godby said. “We gotta try and limit mistakes, be focused and keep our composure.”

Before the state lacrosse playoffs begin on April 28, the Eagles will wrap up the regular season with road games against the Chattahoochee Cougars and the Mill Creek Hawks on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. The Hawks will finish their season against the Starr’s Mill Panthers on Thursday.
