Westminster Girls Soccer remains undefeated on the season

The Westminster girls soccer team earned a 3-1 win over the Marist War Eagles Wednesday night, which was also the Wildcats’ senior night.

This wasn’t an easy win, as Westminster had to come from behind after trailing 1-0 to score three unanswered goals.

“They’re not used to being behind, but that was a good test,” Westminster head coach Clark Meyer said.

The first goal for the Wildcats was scored by sophomore Evelyn Shores, the second by freshman Alex Fallon and the third by junior Henley Tippins.

Coach Meyer credits his team’s mentality as well as the fact that they have so many players on the team who can score.

“We have a team that has a lot of match-winning players,” coach Meyer said. “A lot of girls who can take the game by the strength of their neck and make things happen. We just have too many weapons for opposing teams to key on any one individual and shut them down.”

This win allows the Wildcats to remain undefeated on the season at 11-0 overall. The No. 1 ranked team in the state and No. 5 ranked team nationally continues to take big steps in the eyes of their coach.

“We find ourselves in a position of being undefeated and that’s kind of a nerving place to be and so I’m really proud that we held our nerve,” coach Meyer said. “I think that’s really important if we want to be the kind of championship team that we want to be. You have to be able to weather that kind of adversity.”

Despite this win keeping them undefeated, coach Meyer wants his team to keep their eyes on the prize and not get caught up on the fact that they’re currently riding a perfect season.

“I think we have the talent to keep this streak going through the end of the year, but we’re not entitled to that and if other teams weren’t pushing us, then it wouldn’t mean as much,” coach Meyer said. “I think we can go the distance, but is that a given? Absolutely not.”
