GWINNETT BEAT: Parkview dominates track and field meet; Ridge and GAC roll in soccer

County Championships were up for grabs last weekend as the track and field championships were held at Mill Creek Community Stadium and the first-ever lacrosse county championships were held at Greater Atlanta Christian. At GAC, Wesleyan claimed the first-ever county title with an 8-6 win over Peachtree Ridge. Drew Daniels and tournament MVP Davis Brown both had two goals while Scott Schroer had three in the victory. Tanner Botts and Cory Hall each had a pair of goals for the Lions of Peachtree Ridge.
Wesleyan earned its way into the finals with victories over Parkview (18-0) and Collins Hill (13-2). The Lions made the finals with wins over Norcross (15-2) and host GAC (11-1). Duluth and Grayson also competed in the event. The Wolves improved to 5-3 and have won four straight matches while Peachtree Ridge is 9-2 following the loss.

COUNTY MEET FAVORS PARKVIEW …
The Gwinnett Track and Field championships were a Parkview Panthers party after the first day of events. The girls scored 50 points after the first day and led Peachtree Ridge by 11 points and Brookwood by 20. The Lady Panthers got to its 50 points thanks to Emily Chosewood’s runner-up finish in the shot put and fourth-place finish in the discus. Indiah Bell won the long jumpr for Parkview while Alexis Petrassi placed eighth in pole vault, Denise Winters placed fourth in the long jump and Rebecca Shane was fifth in the high jump with Alexandria Mitchell was eighth in the event. Shea Spicher was seventh in the 1600-meters.
Peachtree Ridge stayed close with a first-second finish in the high jump with Shioban Frasier and Camille Smith. Heather Morris finished sixth in the 1600-meters while Monique Pate was fourth in the shot put. Raven Brown jumped 35-10.5 in the triple jump, good enough for third while Erika Waters was fifth in the long jump.
Brookwood’s best finisher was Emily Brewer, who finished first in the discus and third in the shot put. Caroline Kissel was second in the 1600-meters.
Defending champion Collins Hill was 27 points back with just 23, putting an eight-year streak in jeopardy. Nicky Akande led the Eagles with a win in the 1600-meters event. Creeann Perkins of Shiloh won the shot put while Carson Simpson of host Mill Creek took home pole vault honors. Jessica Tuggle of GAC captured the triple jump.
The second day of competition would favor the Parkview girls, who saw its lead drop to just one point entering the 3200-meter event. Panther runners Sara Brown and Shea Spicher finished 1-3 for Parkview, giving the team enough of a lead to hold off Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill for the county title. Parkview finished with 90 points to the Lions’ 87 and Collins Hill’s 86.
For the boys, Parkview scored 55.5 points after the first day of competition and looked poised to claim its third-straight team title. Host Mill Creek sat in second with 40 points while Dacula was at 38 and Peachtree Ridge at 36. The Panthers were led by Julian Vann, who won the triple jump as well as the long jump. In the long jump, Vann’s 21-4 just beat out teammate Kmau Brown’s 21-2, who finished in second. In the 1600-meter, it was a Panther sweep in the top two spots with Steven Spevacek winning with a time of 4:30.11, with Alec Klassen finishing at 4:31.06. Other Parkview top finishers included Jordan Funk (seventh in the pole vault), Elijah Gregg (eighth in pole vault), Tre Thomas (eighth in discus), Dexter Lawrence (third in high jump).
Mill Creek was led by pole vault champion Michael Kopanski and Mackey McLee, second in the high jump. Two Hawks placed in the discus with Tyler Cierski placing fourth and Cody Rediger placing seventh.
Dacula was bouyed by Eli Mahaley’s win in the shot put and Peachtree Ridge received points from Carson Sears, champion of the discus and Brandon Stanley, high jump winner. Two Lions placed seventh and eighth in the 1600 meters and Torri Tillman was second in the triple jump. Sears also finished fourth in the shot put.
On day two of the event, Parkview did just enough to hold off a hard charge from Brookwood, who claimed three individual events as well as the 3200-relay but could not overcome the Panthers (109.5 – 100.5).
Peachtree Ridge took home the Gordon Lee Invitational golf tournament with a team score of 305. Zach Estep was the low medalist, shooting a 73 to lead the Lions. It was the third tournament win of the year for Peachtree Ridge.
On the soccer pitch, Peachtree Ridge girls knocked off Camden County 4-0 behind goals from Alanna Dineen, Alexis Scott, Olivia Hall and Shelby Jennings. Ridge improved to 8-3-1. In boys soccer, GAC doubled up Cairo 6-3 with Denzel Clark netting three goals in the win. Kyle Rees and Andy Irwin both added goals for the Spartans in the win.
