The Atlanta Thrashers haven’t thrown the towel in just yet and last night the team moved into a tie for ninth place in the conference standings, just three points out of the final seed. The Thrashers blew a pair of two-goal leads but used three goals in the third period to snuff out the Senators 6-3 . Colby Armstrong scored two third period goals to help the Thrashers earn the final margin of victory. Nik Antropov tallied the go-ahead goal in the third, his second power-play goal of the game, and he now has 21 on the season. Johan Hedberg had 33 saves to pick up the win.
It was a bracket-busting first day of the NCAA tournament yesterday with several major Elite Eight-threats falling to double-digit seeds. No.3 seed Georgetown fell hard to 14-seed Ohio, the first time a 3 has lost in the first round since Iowa in 2006. Vanderbilt, a 4-seed fell to 13-seed Murray State and 6-seed Marquette fell to 11-seed Washington. 2-seed Villanova needed OT to solve Robert Morris and 6-seed Tennessee had to escape from 11-seed San Diego State. Other winners included St. Marys (over Richmond), BYU (over Florida), Kentucky (over ETSU) and Kansas (over Lehigh).
After a long and drawn out recruiting process that finally ended with Bryce Brown signing with the Tennessee Volunteer football program may be out to start again. The running back who averaged 38.3 yards/game as a freshman has left the program according to new coach Derek Dooley and has returned home to Kansas to deal with family problems. Brown will reportedly remain enrolled at the school through the end of the semester, though it is unknown if Brown will transfer. Brown was rated as the top player coming out of high school in 2009.
