The 40th annual Metro Atlanta Swim and Dive meet was held over the past weekend. Westminster hosted the meet that many Fulton county schools attended. Westminster had the highest finish in the boys and girls results, finishing second in girls and third in boys. Alpharetta and Northview had strong finishes, ranking fourth and fifth overall in boys swimming. Westminster freshman Nicole Stafford just missed setting a meet record with a time of 58.05 in the girls 100 backstroke. The state prelims and championships will take place on Feb. 10-13.
The third annual Titan Cup was hosted by Blessed Trinity last week. Not surprisingly, the Titans won the meet, having an advantage with the most wrestlers participating. Their overall score of 237.5 was 46 points ahead of second-place Riverwood. Holy Innocents’ placed fifth with a score of 105.5. Lovett will host the area traditional tournament on Saturday before the state sectionals and finals take place the following weeks.
HOOP REPORT …
South Atlanta won its 32nd consecutive home game when the Hornets beat Jackson-Atlanta, 81-41. It was their fifth win in a row since their devastating loss to Spalding. Against Locust Grove last week, the Hornets hit the century mark, beating the visitors 102-46. South Atlanta sits at 20-2 and the final three games should be a formality for the Hornets.
Despite a loss to Milton, Centennial maintains a top-10 ranking in the AJC poll. This was helped by their win last week over D.W. Daniel (S.C.) 76-64. The loss to Milton, however, put the Knights into a tie for first in the region, but they will get their chance again against the Eagles on Saturday. Before that rematch, the Knights will need to take care of business against Alpharetta on Friday.
Westlake is back to its winning ways, having won five straight games after losing to Morrow earlier in the year. All five wins came against Region 4-AAAAA opponents and virtually wrapped up the region championship for the Lions. Their overall record stands at 20-2 and they are 14-1 in the region. They will finish the regular season with two road games versus Newnan and Lovejoy and one home matchup against East Coweta.
Milton followed its loss to Wheeler with two convincing wins over Roswell and Kell last week. The win over Roswell was a dominant won, with Milton winning by the final score of 64-26. The Kell victory was just as lopsided, 78-40. That was to be expected from this No. 1-ranked squad after a loss. It was important to get those two games out of the way before Centennial came calling earlier this week. The Knights are one of very few teams that could have given Milton a challenge this season. The Eagles were more than up to the challenge, however, as they defeated third-ranked Centennial 73-66. They will get a chance to beat the Knights again on Saturday.
The Westlake girls improved their record to 15-3 and 14-1 in Region 4-AAAAA with a win over Mundy’s Mill, 79-63. It was their sixth win in a row and puts the Lady Lions in great position to capture the region title with only three games left. Led by leading scorer Danielle Spencer, Westlake will finish the regular season against three region foes before preparing for the state playoffs.
The Holy Innocents’ Lady Bears have beaten just about every opponent that they have faced this season. After wins over Walker, 48-31, and Fellowship Christian, 51-38, their record stands at 20-2. In the Walker win, Alex Williams scored a game-high 16 points, while Brooke Devore chipped in with nine points. Elandria Thurmond and Reshaundra Owens both pulled down 10 rebounds. Against Fellowship, Williams again led the team in scoring with 15 points and McKenzie Bolden added 14. The Walker win essentially clinched the Region 5-A title for the Lady Bears. They are undefeated at 5-0 in the region with three games left to play. They will put their seven-game winning streak on the line next against Mt. Paran.
