Friday Roundup: Thrashers fall in OT, Georgia gets its man?

Tim Tucker of the AJC is once again going with a Twitter report in regards to the Georgia defensive coordinator position and once again the tweet claims Georgia has its man. According to Rivals.com’s Tom Deinhart, Georgia and Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham have agreed on a three-year deal that would make Grantham the third highest paid defensive coordinator in the country. Neither Grantham nor the university have commented but Deinhart first posted the report on the Rivals’ website and then followed up with a Twitter report. Last week, 790 The Zone’s David Pollack tweeted that Kirby Smart was all but locked in to coming to Georgia before Smart decided to stay at Alabama. No press conference has been called for as of 7:15 A.M. Friday morning.

There is a sliver of good news for the Atlanta Thrashers after last night’s overtime loss to Buffalo: at least the winning goal came in OT and Atlanta gained a point. Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec stopped 30 of 32 shots but one goal came in OT to give the Sabres the 2-1 victory. Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power play goal late in the third to force OT but a penalty with under two minutes to play in regulation carried over to OT and then the Thrashers were whistled for an elbowing penalty in the OT period and the Sabres capitalized with the winning goal. Buffalo had six shots on goal in OT while Atlanta failed to record even one.

All good things must come to an end and last night, the Georgia women’s season-opening winning streak ended at 16 as the No.6 Lady Dawgs fell at Vanderbilt 66-44. Jasmine James led Georgia with 10 points while Angel Robinson had 9 in the loss. The Commodores outrebounded Georgia 39-24, getting 15 second-chance points.

Finally two Gwinnett County products will have a shot at major league soccer after getting selected in the MLS Soccer Superdraft. The Chicago Fire selected former Norcross Blue Devil Steven Kinney in the third round before selecting former Brookwood standout Sean Johnson in the fourth round. Kinney played at Elon before being drafted while Johnson was at Central Florida before leaving for the MLS feeder Generation Adidas program.
