Week 4 Friday Night Roundups

Rome held for a 21-20 win at home against Kell after the Longhorns missed a last-second field-goal attempt in the teams’ first Region 7-AAAAA game. Kell scored a touchdown on an 11-yard Corbin LaFrance pass to Jaylon Brown with 27 seconds remaining to pull within one point, but failed on a two-point try. The Longhorns recovered an onside kick at the Rome 46 and quickly moved into field-goal range but missed a 39-yard attempt wide left as time expired.

The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime. LaFrance found Cam Ball for a 26-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Rome answered in the second with a 2-yard E.J. Burks touchdown run. Rome took a 14-7 lead in the third on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Ellard to Trey Lawrence, and Kell tied it with a 2-yard David Mbadinga run with 9:22 left to play. Ellard found Jay Wise for a 57-yard touchdown pass with 7:50 remaining to give the Wolves a 21-14 lead.

Rome improved to 2-1, recovering from its opening loss against nationally ranked Marietta, and Kell fell to 2-1.

Class AAAAAAA

South Forsyth 35, South Gwinnett 28

South Forsyth trailed for only two minutes and 53 seconds—and by only one point during that time—before eventually holding off host South Gwinnett. The War Eagles led 13-0 after one quarter thanks to a Tre Green touchdown run and a scoring strike from Galvin Morris to Colby Cruz on a double-pass trick play. Remari Hudson and Armand Anderson found the endzone in the second quarter to give South Gwinnett a brief advantage, but South Forysth was quick to regain control. Joe Slott threw a touchdown pass to Devin McGlockton with three seconds left in the first half to take a 21-14 lead at the break. The War Eagles got second-half scores by Cameron Schurr (from Slott) and Brett Morlanne. While trying to tie or win on the final drive of the game, the Comets came up short due to a sack by South Forsyth’s Taft Hilton and ensuing intentional grounding penalty.

Lowndes 27, East Coweta 3

Sophomore quarterback Jacurri Brown gave Lowndes a first-quarter lead with a quarterback sneak near midfield. After a scoreless second, Lowndes’ Gary Osby reached the end zone with 5:19 in the third, but the score was called back. Osby responded by rushing the ball into the end zone again for a touchdown that stood and extended the lead to 13-0. East Coweta managed to put points on the board with a field goal in the fourth, and the quarter closed out with Osby rushing for his second score of the game and junior Justin Lee running in a 50-yard touchdown to cap the game at 27-3.

Collins Hill 28, Brookwood 12

Brookwood’s defense racked up a first-quarter safety for an early 2-0 lead, and the only points of the quarter. Collins Hill’s Sam Horn tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to junior Logan Brown to gain the lead with 6:00 left in the half before a Brookwood field goal brought the score to 7-5 at the break. Collins Hill’s senior running back Isaiah Love rushed 23 yards into the end zone early in the third quarter to extend the Eagles lead. Brookwood was able to answer with a touchdown, but a quarterback sneak by Horn kept the Eagles safely ahead 21-12 to start the fourth. Love found the end zone once more in the fourth en route to Collins Hill’s first victory over Brookwood in program history.

Newton 20, Arabia Mountain 6

Newton RB Quincy Cullins scored rushing touchdowns of 39 yards and 8 yards during the Rams’ road game in the first quarter. Jerrol Hines added a punt return touchdown late in the first as well. The Rams held a 20-6 lead in the second quarter when the game was delayed due to weather, and that score stood as the final after the game was called.

Mill Creek 10, Archer 7

Kickoff at Mill Creek was delayed an hour due to lightning before the matchup between the Hawks and the visiting Archer Tigers finally began, but the weather still wasn’t ready to cooperate. After multiple scheduled restart times came and went, the game was called in the second quarter with Mill Creek up 10-7 over Archer. Brock Pellegrin’s 30-yard field goal put the Hawks on the board first before Archer’s Jordan Swain scored on a 99-yard run on the last play of the opening frame. Quarterback MJ Patterson secured the lead for Mill Creek, and ultimately the win, with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Khamari Glover, capitalizing on the friendly field position provided by Glover’s 55-yard return on the kickoff.

Class AAAAAA

Dalton 42, Sequoyah 14

The Sequoyah Chiefs scored the first and last touchdowns of their home game against Dalton, but the rest of the game belonged to the Catamounts’ star back Jahmyr Gibbs. After the teams traded fumbles on their opening drives, Sequoyah quarterback Colin Koprowski put the Chiefs on the board first with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Gibbs tied it up moments later with a 98-yard kickoff return for the first of his five unanswered touchdowns. He added scores on runs of 39, 14 and 50 yards in under six minutes in the second for a halftime Dalton lead of 28-7, and a personal statline of 145 yards on 10 carries, 95 yards on the kickoff return, and four total touchdowns. After accounting for all but 15 of Dalton’s total first-half yards on offense, Gibbs scored his final touchdown on a short run early in the third quarter. Joshua Moore got in on the fun later in the frame with a 10-yard rushing score for a 42-7 Dalton lead, set up by a 49-yard run from Gibbs, and Aidan Moore added a 9-yard touchdown run for Sequoyah in the fourth.

Valdosta 50, Colquitt County 49

Valdosta scored a touchdown and tacked on a two-point conversion with one minute remaining to survive a wild one against visiting Colquitt County. The Wildcats led most of the way, including 21-0 after one quarter thanks to a fumble return for a score by Quinton Wade and an 80-yard touchdown pass from Tate Rodemaker to T.J. Dailey. Thus began a huge night for Dailey, who scored both of Valdosta’s touchdowns in a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Quarterback Jaycee Harden and running back Daijun Edwards sparked Colquitt County’s comeback as the Packers finally took a lead for the first time at 49-42 midway through the final frame of play. Edwards finished with more than 300 yards of total offense. The Packers surged into field-goal range with their last-minute drive, but a 40-yard attempt drifted wide left as time expired.

Northside-Warner Robins 35, Whitewater 6

Northside controlled the ground game with four rushing touchdowns on the evening to beat Whitewater. The Eagles got three touchdowns from quarterback Mason Ford, who rushed in from 22, seven and one yard, and Zikhyree Hill scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with six minutes left in the game to put it away. Austin Williams passed to Braylon Kennedy for an 18-yard touchdown for Whitewater, but the PAT was missed.

Alexander 21, South Paulding 21

The back-and-forth showdown between South Paulding and Alexander saw the two teams trading touchdowns throughout the night. South Paulding scored first and was able to maintain the upper hand until the start of the fourth quarter, when the Spartans gave up a touchdown and allowed Alexander to tie the game at 21-21. A lightning strike late in the final period delayed play for more than an hour before the game was finally called.

Class AAAAA

McIntosh 17, Luella 7

Touchdown runs by Malique Mackey (18 yards) and Dominick Cosper (5) gave McIntosh a 14-7 lead at the half. Host Luella got on the board in the first quarter with a touchdown run by quarterback Jamal Vazquez. The teams went scoreless in the second half until William Mason’s 25-yard field goal went through the uprights with 37 seconds left.

Starr’s Mill 28, Chapel Hill 21

Chapel Hill got on the board with 3-yard touchdown run by Bradley Turner early in the second quarter to grab a 7-0 lead. Starr’s Mill quarterback Hunter Lawson answered with an 88-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Townson and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Necesary to put the Panthers up 14-7 at the half. Chapel Hill regained a 21-14 lead following a pair of touchdown runs by Rudolph Paul and appeared to be back in control. On the Panthers’ next possession, however, Jomaurie Hester’s pass went over the head of the intended receiver, and into the arms of Starr’s Mill junior Jonathan Higle. Higle returned it 30 yards for the game-tying touchdown (21-21) with 1:10 left in the third. Starr’s Mill running back Imani Davis provided the game-winning touchdown on a 2-yard run with 3:06 left.

Carrollton 23, Villa Rica 2

Carrollton split its scoring between the second and fourth quarters while holding Villa Rica to a safety on Friday. Mecose Todd scored on a 13-yard run with 8:32 left in the second quarter, Terrell Carmichael returned a punt 31 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left before the half, and Damean Dominguez kicked a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. With 2:45 left in the game, Myles Morris scored on a 2-yard run to put Carrollton up 23-2. Morris was 6-of-14 passing for 50 yards, and Todd added 54 yards on nine carries. The Trojans held Villa Rica to just 52 yards of total offense.

Buford 33, Life Christian (SC) 22

Buford hosted out-of-state opponent Life Christian as the Wolves searched for their third consecutive win of the season. The Eagles were first on the board and tacked on a 2-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead in the first. Buford responded when junior quarterback Jarvis Evans connected with Elijah Turner on a 22-yard touchdown pass, and senior kicker Hayden Olsen gave the Wolves a 10-8 lead following a successful 38-yard field goal. Buford extended its lead in the second with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Evans to sophomore Jake Pope, but Life Christian was able to make it a one-point game with a rushing touchdown and two-point conversion before the half. The Eagles regained the lead in the third with a long rushing touchdown before a second touchdown from Buford’s Turner, paired with a safety by the Wolves defense, gave Buford a 26-22 lead and the ball. Gabe Ervin added a 1-yard touchdown run to put Buford up 33-22, and that score became final when the game was called due to weather conditions.

Stockbridge 21, Locust Grove 6

Visiting Stockbridge came away with a win against the Locust Grove Wildcats after the Tigers scored all 21 points in the fourth quarter. Locust Grove, whose kicker Trey McDonald was hurt on the opening kickoff, scored first on a touchdown pass from Jalen Wofford to Travis Booker in the first quarter, and the 6-0 Wildcat lead held until the final frame. Quarterback Jevon McDonald scored two of Stockbridge’s three fourth-quarter touchdowns, securing the 3-0 start for the Tigers. Wofford finished with 190 yards on 15-of-30 passing for Locust Grove, who dropped to 0-4.

Warner Robins 37, Baldwin 14

Warner Robins quarterback Jalen Addie threw two touchdown passes to Armon Porter (30, 5 yards), and Cary Payne hit a pair of field goals (37, 40 yards) in the first half to put the Demons up 20-0. Baldwin cut into the deficit with a Gerald Kilgore touchdown pass to Shatavious Hogan early in the second half. Following the Braves’ touchdown, Addie was nearly intercepted in the endzone, but teammate Ty Carr was able to wrestle out the ball and was credited with a fumble recovery touchdown that extended Warner Robins’ lead to 27-7. Addie threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game to Duece Petty and Payne booted a 42-yard field goal to make it 37-7 in the fourth quarter.

Dutchtown 13, Ola 7

Arendez Fedd’s 8-yard quarterback keeper broke a 7-7 tie, giving visiting Dutchtown a 13-7 lead after a missed PAT, and Dillon Stokes sealed the win for the Bulldogs with an interception. Dutchtown took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown rush by Jamal Bing, then Ola tied it on a Hunter Kautz 3-yard keeper with 1:16 left in the first half.

Class AAAA

Blessed Trinity 28, Benedictine 7

Blessed Trinity scored on a 44-yard touchdown run by Englan Williams to close out the first quarter with a 7-0 lead. Host Benedictine answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Holden Geriner to Trent Broadnax before the Titans’ scored 21 unanswered points to clinch the victory. Blessed Trinity’s running game accounted for all 213 of the team’s first half yardage. Freshman Justice Haynes rushed for two touchdowns and Duncan Reavis found the end zone on a quarterback sneak early in the third quarter.

Cartersville 51, McNair 0

Top-ranked Cartersville opened up a 30-0 lead in the first quarter and led 44-0 at the half. Quarterback Tee Webb threw three touchdowns to Sam Phillips (25, 14, 21 yards) and one to Devonte Ross (38 yards). Amarai Orr tackled McNair’s punter for a safety in the first quarter and Harrison Allen ran in a 1-yard score. Quante Jennings (4 yards) and Jalen Thomas (1 yard) also ran for touchdowns. Thomson’s run put Cartersville up 51-0 in the third quarter and weather forced the game to be called early in the fourth.

Oconee County 34, Morgan County 6

The visiting Oconee County Warriors dominated the Morgan County Bulldogs with a strong running game before the game was called midway through the fourth quarter due to inclement weather. Oconee’s first two trips to the end zone came from Darrius Norman, and Jimmy Boswell’s first touchdown with a minute left in the second quarter gave The Warriors a 21-0 lead at the break. With Oconee up 28-0 after another score from Boswell a few minutes into the third, the Bulldogs recovered and returned an Oconee County fumble to the Warriors 8-yard line. Morgan County running back Keirreon Farley ended the drive with the Bulldogs’ only touchdown. Oconee County quarterback Max Johnson scored the final touchdown in the fourth.

Cairo 53, Northside-Columbus 7

Cairo responded to an early Northside-Columbus touchdown with 53 unanswered points to run away with a dominant Region 1-AAAA victory. The kickoff that followed the lone Patriots score was returned for a touchdown by Tay Solomon. Kicker Noah Jones opened the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal before Solomon added back-to-back touchdown runs to put the Syrupmakers up 25-7 with 2:33 left in the half. The Cairo defense forced a punt that was blocked late in the half and quarterback Matthew Peters lofted a 29-yard touchdown pass to Earnest Taylor to make it 32-7. Peters went back to Taylor for a 34-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half and added a 49-yard touchdown run midway through the quarter. Running back Kamaree Perry scored the game’s final points on an 8-yard run.

Sandy Creek 43, Ridgeland 7

Matt Williams threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers as visiting Sandy Creek cruised to a 43-7 win over Ridgeland after leading 31-0 at halftime. Brian Branch, Ahmad Jackson, Dealo Parson and Miles Thornton caught scoring passes from the senior Williams, and Rashad Amos added two rushing touchdowns for the Patriots.

Marist 14, Westminster 0

Marist led visiting Westminster 14-0 when the game was stopped due to lightning. It will not be resumed, giving the War Eagles a non-region win. Quarterback Connor Cigelske opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. The first weather delay came with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, and an additional two minutes of game action were played more than an hour later. Brett Zoeller added a touchdown run during that brief time before a second weather-related interruption ended the night with six minutes left until halftime.

Class AAA

Adairsville 35, Coahulla Creek 0

Visiting Adairsville opened up its Region 6-AAA schedule with a dominant performance over the Colts. Quarterback Conner Crunkleton threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Simmons in the first quarter and added a 71-yard touchdown to Tyshawn Savage in the third that extended the Tigers’ lead to 28-0. Adairsville’s defense also had a fantastic night. Malachi Garner’s fumble recovery set up a Ja’Mauri Johnson touchdown run in the second quarter and Courtney Slocum returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including an 84-yard return for the game’s final points.

Class AA

Callaway 69, Cross Keys 0

Auburn-commit Cartavious ‘Tank’ Bigsby took Callaway’s first play from scrimmage in for a 65-yard touchdown. The Cavaliers’ defense forced a turnover on Cross Keys’ next possession and Demetrious Coleman found Jymere Jones for a 16-yard touchdown to put Callaway ahead 13-0 just 23 seconds into the game. Coleman added a 31-yard touchdown pass to Markus Morman and Bisgby scored on a 30-yard touchdown run to build the lead to 37-0 at the end of the first quarter. Coleman scrambled in for a 48-yard touchdown in the opening minute of the second quarter and Bigsby broke loose for a 69-yard touchdown to put Callaway up 41-0 with 7:17 left in the opening half. An Eli Freeman fumble recovery set up another Coleman touchdown pass to Morman, and Amarion Truitt’s 1-yard touchdown run with 32 seconds left in the half made it 55-0. Callaway added a touchdown run and a fumble recovery touchdown in the third quarter for the 69-0 final.

Jeff Davis 7, Brantley County 0

Jeff Davis only needed one score to secure a road win against Brantley County on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets defense held Brantley County to just 136 yards of total offense while forcing two turnovers. Jeff Davis had 263 yards of total offense, 210 of which came via the rushing attack. Aahiyus Allen led all players with 112 yards and scored the game’s lone touchdown as well.

Class A

Prince Avenue Christian 49, Providence Christian 3

Freshman quarterback Lucian Anderson finished with four touchdown passes to lead visiting Prince Avenue Christian past the Storm. Three of his touchdown passes were hauled in by junior Logan Johnson—including a 71-yard connection in the first quarter. Trey Stills added to the Wolverines’ lead with an interception return for a touchdown, and Zac Dyler notched a touchdown reception and a 40-yard touchdown run.

Stratford Academy 14, Washington-Wilkes 7

Raelen Jones rushed 3 yards for the game-winning score for visiting Stratford Academy with 8:26 left to play. Stratford held a 7-0 halftime lead after a Dell Sikes 7-yard run with 2:04 left in the first half, and Washington-Wilkes tied the game at 7-7 with 3:49 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard run.
