Walton began its trek for a fifth-straight volleyball championship in the state’s highest classification with 2-0 victories over Class AAA No. 2 Westminster and Class AAAAAA No. 4 Harrison in its season opener on Tuesday. The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAAAA, won the AAAAAA title in 2015 before winning three-straight in AAAAAAA. Since 2010, Walton only missed out on a state championship in 2014 when North Cobb took the title.
“As far as how we played, for having a completely new lineup, I thought the team played beautifully,” said Walton head coach Suzanne Fitzgerald.
Walton edged the Wildcats in the first set 25-22. In the second set, Walton commanded a 25-20 victory. Against Harrison, the Raiders won decidedly 25-8 in the first set. In the second set, Walton controlled the pace to seal the match with a 25-15 victory.
“This group has a tremendous work ethic and huge heart,” Fitzgerald said. “It definitely showed tonight against two very skilled opponents.”
