The GHSA Soccer Playoffs continued tonight with the Class 6A, 4A and 2A girls teams all taking to the fields. For baseball, the Class A-Public and A-Private series began along with the continuation of any necessary game threes for tied series from the previous classifications.
On the pitch, the Dacula Falcons handed Douglas County a 9-0 loss en route to their first sweet sixteen appearance in school history. Within the first minutes of the match, senior Danai Chimedza took a pass from Becky Contreras and shot the ball through to the back of the net to put the Falcons on the board. Chimedza wasn’t done though, scoring five more goals in the first half to help mount a strong lead over Douglas County. Contreras would also score a first-half goal, along with a goal from Madison Severy after a deep run down field to make it an 8-0 game at the half.
Senior captain Andi Wells helped hold down the defense all game, but made an impact on offense by sending in the ninth goal of the match in the second. Sophomore goalkeeper Michaela English got the shutout. Dacula now awaits a matchup against Dunwoody in the sweet sixteen.
On the baseball diamond, Westminster beat Jefferson in Game 3 of its first-round playoff matchup to advance to face North Hall in the second round.
In Game 1 on Wednesday, Westminster won 7-1 before Jefferson rallied to take Game 2, 8-0.
Tonight, Davidson-commit Edward Shores pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up four runs before reaching the 120-pitch limit. Junior Charlie Wickliffe came in and struck out the Jefferson batter, stranding two runners on base to end the game. Scoring came from senior Ben Forte who hit the top of the center field wall for an RBI double in the first inning. Grant Matzigkeit also had an RBI single in the first inning to help fuel the 5-4 victory.
