Fifteen semifinal winners and two invitational place teams will make the journey to Fort Benning for the 2018-19 State Riflery Playoffs at the Pool International Shooting Complex 10 Meter Range on Saturday.
After a record-setting performance in 2018, the Ware County rifle team returns to defend its title for the third-straight year after defeating Lumpkin County in the sectionals and Lee County in the semifinals. Ware County appears to be peaking at the right time of the year after firing a season-high 1177 against Lumpkin County. Laci Jewell shot what would have been a new state championship record of 297 ahead of Tyler Hanson’s 296 and Cole Howard’s 295. Ben Smith Jr. followed with a 289.
Last year, the Gators set a team state championship record while edging out runner-up Allatoona 1169-69 to 1164-68 for the second-straight title in the three-position competition: prone, standing and kneeling. Jewell and Smith Jr. led the Ware in last year’s record-setting final with scores of 294 and both will return alongside Hanson, who scored 292 last year.
Carrollton was also in the mix in 2018 and should factor this year. Last year, sophomore Morgan Frank tied the state individual championship record with a score of 296 to match the efforts of Allatoona’s Alana Kelly in 2014 and Columbus’ Veronica Leggett in 2015. The effort helped the Trojans to a fourth-place finish. She returns this year after Carrollton edged Allatoona 1140-1125 in the semifinals.
Programs will take their equipment to the firing line at 0945-0955 for Relay 1 and 11330-1140 for Relay 2. The Prone competition will take place from 1013-1023 for Relay 1 and 1158-1208 for Relay 2. The Standing competition will commence between 1033-1048 for Relay 1 and 1218-1233 for Relay 2. The Kneeling competition will begin from 1058-1108 for Relay 1 and 1243-1253 for Relay 2.
The finals will take place approximately 30 minutes after the second relay.
