The semifinals of the GHSA State Volleyball Championships took place Tuesday night and the championship matches have been set across all seven classifications for Saturday.
The championships for the top classes — AAAA, AAAAA, AAAAAA and AAAAAAA — will take place at Marietta High School while the title matches for the bottom classes — A-AA-Private, A-AA-Public and AAA — will take place at McEachern High School.
Walton’s march toward its fourth-consecutive title in the state’s highest classification – 2015 in AAAAAA and the past two years in AAAAAAA – advanced another mile on Tuesday following its 3-0 defeat of North Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAAA semifinals.
The Lady Raiders took a 25-10 victory in the first set and a 25-14 victory in the second one to set up a do-or-die situation for North Gwinnett, the No. 1 seed from Region 6. But the top-ranked Raiders were too much and took the third set 25-20 to advance to face Milton at Marietta on Saturday. Milton earned its championship berth with a 3-1 victory over West Forsyth in the semifinals.
Class AAAAAA
Pope, the No. 2 seed from Region 7, will play against Allatoona in the championship match after beating Creekview 3-1 in the semifinals. Allatoona, the No. 1 seed from Region 6, won 3-1 over Alpharetta to earn its championship berth.
Class AAAAA
Starr’s Mill, the No. 3 seed from Region 3, punched its ticket to the championship match with a long-winded victory over cross-county rival Whitewater 3-2. Starr’s Mill will face crosstown rival McIntosh in the championship match. McIntosh, the No. 1 seed from Region 8, defeated Buford to earn the championship berth.
Class AAAA
St. Pius X, the top-seed from Region 8, advanced to the championship match against Marist after beating Cartersville in three straight sets in the semifinals. Marist, the No. 1 team from Region 7, earned the championship berth with a 3-1 victory over Columbus in the semis.
Class AAA
Westminster, the No. 2 seed from Area 4, defeated Greater Atlanta Christian 3-0 to advance to the title match against Pace Academy. The Wildcats won the first set 25-18, the second set 25-15 and the third set 25-20 to advance. Pace, the top-seed from Area 4, earned its championship berth with a 3-0 victory over Lovett.
Class AA-A-Public
Coosa, the top-seed from Area 6, punched its ticket to the championship match with a 3-0 victory over Gordon Lee. The Eagles won the first match 25-20 which was the closest match of the set. From there, Coosa won 25-15 and 25-16 to earn the title berth against Elite Scholars, the top-seed from Area 5. Elite Scholars defeated Harlem in three sets to earn its championship berth. Elite won the first set 25-14 and the second set 25-17. Harlem made a charge in the third set but Elite held on for a 25-23 victory.
Class AA-A-Private
Mount Paran Christian will face Calvary Day in the championship match on Saturday after defeating Hebron Christian 3-0 in the semifinals. Mount Paran won the first set 25-14, the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-20. Calvary Day will be playing for its fourth-straight state title after sweeping Walker 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19.
