PREP ROUNDUP: Northside denies Lowndes in upset; Lovett falls to rival Westminster

Lowndes came to Warner Robins a consensus top-five team in the nation and the No. 1 team in Class A, but left with a humbling 10-7 loss at the hands of Northside in a game that was decided by special teams.

Northside kicker Dillon Mixon hit a 20-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to put the Eagles up 10-7. On the game’s final possession, Lowndes drove to the Northside 4-yard line, where the potential game-winning touchdown catch was nullified by offensive pass interference. With the longer kick, the Vikings’ field-goal specialist missed wide right as time expired to give Northside the win and a perfect 5-0 record. Lowndes drops to 5-1 on the season; with the win, Northside is in the driver’s seat in Region 1-AAAAA.

The first half of Lovett’s season was marked by a mammoth upset of two-time reigning Class 2A champion Buford, but the second half started off with a thud. Lovett fell to rival Westminster 21-6 on Friday night, falling to 5-1 on the year. Westminster improves to 3-2 with the crucial Region 6-AA victory.
