PREP FINAL: Marist rolls Tucker, Grayson takes out Parkview and more

For the second year in a row, Marist cruised to an easy win over a top-ranked Tucker squad.

The 10th-ranked War Eagles picked up a 32-7 victory in Adams Stadium on Friday night, as Marist’s offense executed some big plays. Marist struck on the first play from scrimmage with a 45-yard pass completion, and Matt Connors then scored from 38 yards out on the first drive. Sam McNearny put Marist up 14-0 at the beginning of the second quarter with a long run, and the War Eagles led 21-7 at halftime. Marist ended up with 469 yards total on the night, and held Tucker to 228 in limiting their skill players. Marist improves to 4-1 with the win, and Tucker falls to 4-1 with the loss.

Grayson grabbed hold of Region 8-AAAAA with a gritty 33-7 road win over Parkview, the fourth straight win for the Rams in the series. Grayson running back Ean Pemberton had 103 yards rushing on 23 carries, and the Rams controlled the clock in order to limit Parkview’s spread attack. Parkview quarterback Kalik Barnes tried to keep the Panthers in it by throwing three touchdown passes in the second half, but Grayson’s Devin Gillespie scored on a 60-yard run to put Grayson up 33-20 and put the game out of reach. Grayson remains unbeaten.

Newnan took it to Region 4-AAAAA rival Creekside in a battle of undefeated teams. Newnan’s stingy defense, led by twins Alec Ogletree at safety and Alexander Ogletree at linebacker, held Creekside’s offense in check in a 34-6 Newnan victory. Cougar running back Christopher Robinson keyed the victory with 122 yards rushing and a touchdown in the game. … Charles Perkins rumbled for 204 yards and two touchdowns to help Collins Hill squeak past North Forsyth, 14-10. Collins Hill is undefeated overall and in Region 7-AAAAA. … North Clayton defeated Region 4-AAAA opponent Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 34-13 in another clash between unbeatens. North Clayton’s Clarence Jackson had 118 yards rushing and an interception return while playing out of position — he’s usually a linebacker — at defensive back.
