Everything is set in place now for what could be one of the more exciting PGA TOUR Championships we have seen since its very first event in 1997. Surprisingly, none of the top four finishers from last year made the cut for this year’s championships. Sergio Garcia, Andy Kim, and of course last year’s winner, Vijay Singh, are all guys we usually see up there in the ranks with Tiger and the other greats, but not this go-round.
This year everyone should be sure to keep an eye out for Tiger. He has been playing some near-flawless golf lately after setting a new course record at Cog Hill Country Club and simultaneously claiming the BMW Championship first-place victory. Also, he has won the FedEx Cup once before and is trying relentlessly to be the first golfer with two wins at the TOUR Championship. Don’t rule out John Daly, though. He has been notorious for stepping it up at East Lake as he has shot under par his last eight of 12 rounds at the course.
Steve Stricker has played really well during the past few months of the tour, and his less-than-satisfactory performance at Cog Hill just might give him the kick he needs to step it up and take this one away. I would be sure to watch him, too. The last golfer who I would really watch out for next weekend is Jim Furyk. This is a man who is just ready to win it, plain and simple, after suffering a four-stroke penalty at the Barclays from accidentally carrying an extra sand wedge inside his bag, which his caddy did not notice until mid-round. That little mistake cost him about $135,000 because he would have finished sixth overall without the penalty factored in. He is a man on a mission next week, and it will be quite interesting to see if he can step it up to play against the best players in the game.
