HALFTIME BLOG: Georgia regains lead before break

Will the real Georgia Bulldogs please stand up?

Despite controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, the Dawgs trailed for much of the entire half before taking the lead with just under two minutes left. After a frantic last-minute drive, the Dawgs were able to convert a short field goal to extend their lead to 27-21.

A gutsy fourth-down conversion at the Arkansas 31 led to a Joe Cox to A.J. Green touchdown which gave Georgia their first lead of the game. Mike Moore hauled in a short pass over the middle to earn a crucial first down.

Three costly turnovers in their own half of the field cost Georgia 14 points and bad field position for much of the half.

To make matters worse, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett owned the Georgia secondary and was on point with nearly every pass in the first quarter. Mallett led the Hogs to three first-quarter touchdown drives to give the Razorbacks an early 21-10 lead in a wild first quarter.

However, Georgia was able to get past their own mistakes to climb back into the ballgame. Richard Samuel took a handoff on second and 20 and sprinted 80 yards to pay dirt to draw the Bulldogs to within four.

It is the longest run by a Georgia player since the 2007 Troy game when Knowshon Moreno ran the same distance for a touchdown.

In the first quarter, the Hogs had two one play touchdown drives, both were passes covering 48 and 30 yards respectively.

It was a sloppy first half with 14 total penalties which combined for 126 yards. Arkansas linebacker Jerry Franklin was expelled from the game after drawing two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the same play.

The Georgia defense came through with a solid second-quarter performance after allowing 21 points in the first quarter. Willie Martinez’s charges shut out the Hogs in the second quarter helping Georgia to outscore them 17-0 in the period.

UGA helped their cause with 10 points in the final 2:22 of the half.
