Favorites withstand challenges in Week 4

Last week brought the upsets, but this week the Goliaths weathered some storms to stave off would-be Davids. Class 5A No. 2 Grayson was in a dogfight with South Gwinnett late, hanging onto a 20-16 lead into the fourth quarter. A touchdown pass by South quarterback Kent Rollins with 11:17 left in the game was called back because of a holding penalty, and Grayson went on to survive the Comets, 27-16. … In other Gwinnett action, North Gwinnett got a challenge from Norcross, but held on to win 26-16.

Northside-Warner Robins, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, got all it wanted from a Valdosta squad trying to prove it is again a contender in Region 1. The Eagles slipped by Valdosta, 16-13, to avoid the upset.

One of those giant-killers from a week ago, Lovett, almost found itself upended by underdog Towers, but hung on for a double-overtime, 26-20 win. The Class 2A No. 3, Lovett survived with a 5-yard run by Taylor Mack to win in OT.
