GHSA Diving State Championships

The 2017 GHSA Swimming & Diving State Championship returned to Georgia Tech’s Recreation Center Aquatic yesterday, kicking off three days of showcasing Georgia’s elite aquatic athletes. The divers began this week’s festivities with Class AAAAAA and AAAAAAA competing for the title. Coming away with first place and a state title was Rachel Renner of Sequoyah. The Cherokee County product recorded a 527.45.  Second place was awarded to Ambria D’Alonzo of Mill Creek who finished with a score of 512.60. Third place heads to Cobb County as Walton’s Samantha Carmon posted a 482.70. On the boys side, Peter Smithson was superb, leading the pack with a 613.45 to win a state championship for Collins Hill. South Georgia was well represented as Colquitt County’s Parker Hardigree dove to a second place finish with a score of 586.40. Walton’s steady program brought home both third and sixth place as Josh Getty scored a 524.80 and Kyle Hudson a 436.00.

There was a historic performance in the Class A-AAAAA girls pool as Wesleyan’s Abby Gardner four-peated as a state championship en route to setting a new state record with a 554.60 and becoming just the second girl diver in history to win state all four years, the first being Lauren Hall in 2012. Ellie Crump (Marist) and Kate McCahan (Wesleyan) finished second and third with scores of 509.05 and 475.80, respectively. St. Pius X ruled on the boys side as Grant Summers captured the crown with a 578.05 mark. Anthony Stewart placed second with a 514.65 for Greater Atlanta Christian while third and fourth place went to Westminster. Santia Morales narrowly edged teammate Charlie Greene 513.35 to 511.65.
