For years the state of Georgia has been known as a hotbed for athletes. Basketball, baseball, softball, you name it, the Peach State’s got it. As good as all those sports are in Georgia, the mecca remains football. Top college programs across the nation jockey for the right to land the state’s best and brightest talents. This year is no exception as the pack of Division-I prospects in led by a fantastic group of blue-chip quarterbacks. With the state as good as it gets under center, who really is the best quarterback, regardless of age or classification? Right now it looks like five names stand above the rest.
The old saying goes you can’t win a Super Bowl without a great quarterback. The same can be said about high school football. Of the five players listed below, each has guided their team to a top four ranking in the state in their respective classification.
The No. 1 ranked player in the entire nation for the Class of 2018 belongs to Class AAAA No. 1 Cartersville. Trevor Lawrence guided the Purple Hurricanes to a state championship as a sophomore last year and has Cartersville as the odds on favorites to do it again the next two seasons. He has thrown for 1,431 yards and 18 touchdowns while facing the likes of defending Class AAAAA state champion Allatoona, Calhoun and Westlake.
One of the state’s most prolific passers in history, Jake Fromm, is a Georgia-commit. Fromm has powered the high-flying aerial assault of Class AAAAAA No. 2 Houston County to an undefeated start his senior season. Through the first six games of the year Fromm has already amassed 2,645 yards passing and 28 touchdowns.
Always reliable Florida State-commit Bailey Hockman has Class AAAAAAA No. 4 McEachern off to a 4-1 record. Over the course of his career, Hockman has seen some of the best defenses in the state try to slow him down, most to no avail. After an off junior season, Hockman looks back in sophomore form when his touchdown to interception ratio was one of the best in the state.
A bullseye has been placed squarely on the back of Class AAAAAAA No. 3 Grayson after landing a plethora of D-I transfers. With pressure and expectations at an all-time high, Clemson-commit Chase Brice has proven to be a calming influence, orchestrating the Rams to a 3-1 record while playing a national schedule.
Thought to have been sidelined for three-to-four months with a knee injury, Stanford-commit Davis Mills instead missed just two games. Since his return, Class AAA No. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian’s play caller has thrown for 471 yards and seven scores.
So who’s the best gun-slinger in the state? My money is on 6-foot-6 NFL prototype Trevor Lawrence, the youngest passer out of the group but possibly the most polished. Lawrence has every program in the nation hot on his recruiting tracks. He will also get to show off his versatility and athleticism in the winter as he will suit up for the Purple Hurricane basketball team for the first time.
