GHSF DAILY: High School news, and inside look at the Super 11 and more

The following is an excerpt from the August 26 edition of the Georgia High School Football Daily, an e-mail newsletter compiled by longtime Georgia high school football writers Todd Holcomb and Chip Saye:

Newswire

‘Daddy has come home’ to Westside
Shedrick Risper was a surprise choice of many to succeed Robert Davis as coach at Macon’s Westside High. Risper for years had led Westside’s feeder school, Weaver Middle, to great success. About 90 percent of Westside’s current players played for him at middle school, Risper estimates.

“It’s like Daddy has come home,” Risper told Jonathan Heeter of the Macon Telegraph in this preview of Westside. “They are comfortable with me.”

Westside, which finished 12-1 in the final season under Davis, the retired 353-game winner, opens its season Thursday against Central of Macon.

Oconee rivalry may be put on hold
The principal at North Oconee says he won’t let his school face Oconee County in any sport until 2014 because he doesn’t believe his school’s facilities are on par with his county rival.

“We’ve got to stop playing each other until we’re equitable,” John Osborne told the Athens Banner-Herald in this story. “The bottom line is, we’re not ready.”

North Oconee, which opened in 2004, is a Class AA school. Oconee County, the only other public school in the county, plays in AAA.

Osborne says the school has no weight room, while Oconee County has two. Most athletic facilities must be paid for through revenue or fund-raising, so it’s not a complaint against the school board.

Osborne says in the story that Cedar Shoals of nearby Athens needed 13 years to beat Clarke Central. Cedar did have a 12-game losing streak to Clarke from 1979 to 1987 but actually beat Clarke three of the first five times they met.

Middlebrooks’ injury concerns Campbell
Lincoln County coach Larry Campbell is typically pessimistic in the preseason, but he hasn’t hidden his excitement about having tailback A.G. Middlebrooks, a GHSF Daily Class A Super 11 player, and fullback Tavious McGahee, also an outstanding linebacker.

But the coach now frets about the stress fracture in Middlebrooks’ leg, which has kept the 1,000-yard rusher out indefinitely.

“The injury to A.G. has got us in a big mope right now,” Campbell told Scott Michaux of the Augusta Chronicle in this preview of Lincoln County. “Without him right now we’re going to be scuffling.”

Lincoln County opens with Friday at Greene County.

Gwinnett Daily Post picks all-county
The Gwinnett Daily Post has released a preseason all-county team with its high school preview section. Reader tip: Go to Page 2 for the index. All 21 Gwinnett teams are covered, plus Apalachee and Winder-Barrow in Barrow County.

GHSF Daily can’t argue much with the newspaper’s all-county selections (below), but we will give a shout out to a couple of missing players that we think are awfully good.

One is Grayson linebacker Terry Williams, who made at least three tackles for losses in the 14-10 victory against Camden County.

Another is underrated Peachtree Ridge quarterback Nick Lombardo. He threw for 1,536 yards, about 100 less than the GDP’s choice, Conor Welton of Wesleyan. Both led their teams to championship games last season. Lombardo’s team was runner-up in Class AAAAA. Welton’s team won Class A.

QB Conor Welton, Wesleyan

Spotlight: Inside The Super 11

Stephenson’s Thornton ‘a little ticked off’ by snub

Stephenson defensive tackle Michael Thornton tells the AJC’s Chip Towers that he’s miffed at his snub from the GHSF Daily/Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Super 11 team. “It kind of ticks me off a little bit, yeah,” Thornton says in Towers’ AJC blog. “I felt I deserved to be in there.”

Our response: We don’t blame him. Picking a Super 11 or an all-state team accurately is almost impossible because it’s subjective, and no one has the time or resources to analyze every candidate fairly. For our Super 11 team, we considered the recruit’s high school production and his projected abilities at the next level. If it were simply college potential, we’d just tally the opinions of the recruiting services (which we’ve done below) and be done with it.  But we don’t want to choose players who are just OK so far in high school but who have tested off the charts in summer camps and combines.

Below, we look at the top 40 recruits in Georgia based on a consensus of Rivals (R), Scout (S) and ESPN (E). Then we comment on how the players have done on the field. Thornton has a good argument. (Glad it was Towers and not us taking the heat Monday at Stephenson’s practice.)

Be aware that there were several Super 11 candidates that didn’t make this top 40 list. Among them are Lassiter quarterback Hutson Mason, Grayson running back Ean Pemberton and North Clayton running back and linebacker Clarence Jackson.

Three final observations: 1. Some players – we’re not naming names – did not make all-state in 2008 because their head coaches did not reach out to the media during the December roll call, or vice versa; 2. Some statistics that you read online, especially on recruiting sites, are more accurate than others; 3. South Georgia players are under-represented in recruiting services this year.

Our Super 11 picks are highlighted in bold.
