The GHSA Girls Track & Field Championships at Albany concluded Saturday with three successful title defenses, one first time state crown and McEachern, Monroe-Albany and Greater Atlanta Christian returning to the podium to end their respective state title droughts (See complete results below)
Class AAAAAA saw McEachern run away with its first state title since a back-to-back triumph in 1998-99. The Indians opened Saturday with a first-place finish in the 4×100 relay by edging Westlake by two one-hundreths of a second (46.01 to 46.03). Tamiya Roberts, Nilaja Florence, Makenzie Dunmore and Jasmine Reese legged the 4×100 McEachern relay team. McEachern gained another 10 points in the 4×400 relay by edging the Lions 3:44.87 to 3:46.84. O’Mariyah Tucker joined Dunmore, Roberts and Florence in the four-lap sprint.
North Springs successfully defended its Class AAAAA title and captured the program’s fourth state title by edging second-place Warner Robins. After a third-place finish in the 4×100 meter relay, North Springs’ team of Kennedy Crawford, Kennedi Weston Shields, Tyra Williams and Jayda Drake-Howard closed the day by clocking a 3:47.72 in the 4×400 meter relay that clinch the overall title.
Monroe-Albany outpaced Marist for the Class AAAA title and captured the program’s eighth state title since 2001 and first since a four-peat from 2009-12. A second-place finish in the 200 meter dash by Jahari Williams and a 10-point 3:45.58 finish in the 4×400 meter relay finale clinched the title.
Taryn Oneal gave Jackson-Atlanta a first-place finish in the 400 meter dash with a 56.49 finish and depth prevailed and helped the Jaguars edge Blessed Trinity for the Class AAA title. Jackson-Atlanta earned eight points for a second-place finish in the 4×100 relay, but added another four points in the event after its B team clocked a 49.67 for a valuable fifth-place finish.
In Class AA, Greater Atlanta Christian edged rivals Wesleyan and Lovett for its fourth all-time state title and first since 2012. The Spartans earned 10 points in the 4×100 meter relay, but it was the 100 meter hurdles that impacted their victory the most. Stephanie Reynolds (14.79) and Jada Jones (14.87) posted a one-two finish for a whopping 18 points in that one event.
Georgia Military College dominated with the highest margin of victory this weekend, edging second-place Telfair County by 51 points for the Class A-Public championship. GMC clinched 10 points in both relays, the 300 meter hurdles and the 400 meter dash on Saturday to pad the victory.
Athens Academy’s first-ever state title was led by a strong Day 3 by hurdle specialist Katie Phillips. Phillips earned eight points for a second-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles and racked up 10 points for a 45.31 gold medal finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Anna Marian Block brought home a pair of distance gold medals with a 2:10.82 in the 800 meters and a 4:31.28 in the 1600 meter run to give the Spartans 20 of their 80 total points.
