Afternoon Roundup: Tiger leads the PGA; Stallworth out for ’09

Tiger Woods brought the thunder on his opening round at the PGA Championship Thursday. Woods fired a bogey-free 67 (-5) to grab the one stroke lead over defending champion Padraig Harrington. Woods was 12 of 14 on fairways and made birdie on all but one of the Par-5s. Hunter Mahan is two back at -3.

The NFL has suspended Browns WR Donte Stallworth for one season without pay following his recent jail sentence for killing a man while Stallworth was driving under the influence. Stallworth cannot be reinstated until after the Super Bowl.

Finally, Louisville is standing by its coach. The university president James Ramsey said he supports basketball coach Rick Pitino and says that “it’s time to move on.” Pitino apologized for his alledged role in a former waitress reportedly having an abortion of the coach’s baby.
