Morgan County’s Tatyana Davis netted a 32-point performance to lead the Lady Bulldogs to their first state title with a 68-61 win over Jackson-Atlanta in the Class AAA championship. Davis shot 12-of-21 from the field and included three of the Bulldogs’ seven 3-pointers. Morgan County’s 7-15 shooting from beyond the arc stumped a 2-of-19 performance by Jackson-Atlanta from downtown as they tried to hold pace and chip away at the Bulldogs early lead.
Davis stuffed the stat sheet in nearly every category, adding nine points and seven steals to her game-high 32. Teammate Syndey Nash finished with eight points, three assists and a team-high 10 rebounds, including five of the team’s 21 offensive boards. Alexis Brown (11) and Lou Reid (10) also finished in double figures for Morgan County.
The final result was foreshadowed in the first quarter as Morgan County jumped to a 19-9 lead. Alexis Brown took a defensive rebound coast to coast to put the Bulldogs up 15-8 with 2:17 left in the period and after 85 scoreless seconds Sydney Nash drilled a 3-pointer off a Davis assist. Davis drew the foul on the ensuing possession and split the free throws to cap the timely 6-0 run.
The lead held strong as Morgan County edged the Jaguars by one point in each of the next three quarters (17-16, 15-14, 20-19). Morgan County’s largest lead came with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter as Brown used an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Bulldogs up 18 (64-48). From that point, the Jaguars closed the game on a 13-4 run to close the gap.
Erica Gibbons led Jackson with a monster game that included 26 points and 15 rebounds as the Jaguars lone scorer in double-figures. Kayla Thomas finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Kanissus Mayfield pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her six points. Keimeshia Walker also added six points and teammates Tiernee Smith (5), Tamara White (5) and Shantavius Arnold contributed in the scoring column.
