No. 1 Norcross’ (4-0) resume is already impressive with wins over No. 7 Woodstock, No. 6 Harrison and No. 3 Parkview. The Lady Hoyas of Harrison (2-1) were unranked last week in Class AAAAAA, but their impressive come from behind victory over No. 8 South Forsyth in which they trailed 31-19 at the half but rallied for a 66-62 win, puts them on the map. A 59-52 loss to Norcross is also the closest game the Lady Blue Devils have played this season.
In Class AAAAA, the shakeup has begun. Last week’s No. 1 Sequoyah drops to No. 3 after a 0-2 start in which they fell to Class A-Private No. 1 St. Francis 44-30 and Class AAAA No. 2 Griffin, 37-31. Mays has slipped all the way to No. 10 after opening at No. 2. Losses to Hillgrove, Douglas County and new No. 1 Loganville has the Lady Raiders reeling. Grovetown debuts at No. 9 behind the play of junior Destiny Marshall. She is averaging 24 points per game to power the Warriors.
Tift County was no match for AAAA No. 1 Buford as the Lady Wolves cruised to a 65-27 victory. No. 3 Veterans slips one spot after a loss to AAA No. 1 Laney 66-52. No. 2 Griffin’s hot start has jumped them three spots. No. 5 Americus-Sumter blew out traditional Class A-Private powerhouse SWAC, 80-47.
Class AAA is ruled by No. 1 Laney. The Lady Wildcats have wins over Veterans and AAAAA No. 8 Effingham County, 77-45. De’Sha Benjamin has filled the shoes of Aliyah Collier flawlessly, averaging 22.5 points per game as a sophomore. Former No. 2 Decatur has fallen out of the rankings after a 0-2 start. No. 7 Morgan County debuts and has been impressive with wins over SWAC 62-56 and Miller Grove 76-61.
No. 1 Holy Innocents’ and No. 2 Wesleyan will battle for AA’s top spot all year long. The Lady Wolves have the most impressive victory score-wise, with a 76-4 win over Druid Hills. Lovett and Model flip spots with Model claiming No. 3 to break up Region 6’s grasp of all top three spots. Model beat Lovett 63-48 for a strong win to open the year.
In Class A-Private, No. 5 SWAC has dropped three spots after a 0-3 start, but all three losses have been to red hot teams in Morgan County, Griffin and Americus-Sumter. After a 31-0 perfect season in Class A-Public a year ago, No. 1 Taylor County suffered a rare defeat to open the season, 56-50 to Warner Robins. Hardly any teams in the Public division have begun play, so Taylor County won’t be punished for their early blemish and remain No.1.
