Outlook: After breaking a 23-game losing streak last year, Albany has a chance to turn a two-win team into a playoff contender. The team has a new coach in Felton Williams, a former Albany quarterback who was an assistant to Reginald Mitchell, who left to take the head coaching job at Sherwood Christian. Last season’s Albany team was inexperienced and young, but Williams has an experienced group. Dual-threat quarterback Barry Diamond has a bevy of large targets in Jibri Jinnerson (6 feet, 7 inches), Jarvis Hicks (6-4) and Brandon Johnson (6-3). But two first-team all-region receivers are gone in Rashard Hunt and Kenny Jordan. Another question is whether the defense (33 points allowed per game last year) can stop teams often enough for the offense to outscore them. Five opponents scored at least six touchdowns against the Indians last season.
Berrien Rebels

Outlook: After a three-win season in his first year, head coach Ryan Branch has lost many of his playmakers. He must find replacements for QB Cameron Jones (1,347 yards passing, 318 rushing, 18 total touchdowns), RB Kahlid Lamar (6.0 yards per carry) and WR Kedron West (29 catches, 383 yards). The Rebels do have big-play threat Asa Nelson (23 catches, 245 yards, five TDs) returning. The defense needs to step it up a notch, as it allowed 25 points per game and was overmatched against the region’s better teams.
Brooks County Trojans

Outlook: It was a banner season for Brooks County in 2008 under Maurice Freeman, who returned to the school where he had won a state title in 1994. Having finished 3-7 in ’07, the Trojans came back to go undefeated in the region and played Calhoun tough in the semifinals. Six starters return to an offense that averaged 35 points last season. Chief among those is running back Keith Christopher, who rushed for 1,690 yards last season and 23 touchdowns. He’s a candidate for Class AA player of the year. All-state OL Lawrence Virgil, the region’s best lineman, returns to clear space for him. First-team all-region QB Jeramie Cody (665 yards passing, 1,162 yards rushing) is gone. The defense took some major hits to graduation, as well, as did special teams (Rashad Rose returned six kicks for touchdowns.) Good talent remains, but avoiding injuries will be essential, as this team is not as deep as last year’s.
Cook Hornets
2008 record: 6-6, 4-3 (fourth in region)
Playoffs: Lost to Toombs County 19-7 in the second round

Outlook: Cook replaced the retiring Jim Scroggins with Mac Thompson, hired from a pool of more than 100 applicants. Thompson was 28-9 in three seasons at Calera (Ala.) and is a former assistant at Hoover (Ala.) under Rush Propst. That means you’ll see the spread offense. With only five starters returning, it’s going to take some time to get Cook back to its decade average of nine victories, although Thompson has a special player in RB/LB Shannon Brown. A junior, Moore reportedly has offers from such schools as Georgia, Clemson and Tennessee. The team also must cope with the death of starting RB and popular student Roy White III, who collapsed at practice May 12 and was never revived.
Early County Bobcats

Outlook: Trey Wolf has led Early County to three trips to the Georgia Dome semifinals in his eight seasons, but last year’s team took a swift and decisive downturn to its worst record in 39 years. There will be a lot of seniors on this team who got experience last year. Quarterbacks T.J. Allen and Dillon Drive will battle to replace Antonio Williams under center. The lines of scrimmage could be pretty good with Jordan Heath and Kaylon Harrell clearing space on offense and Marquise George and JaMarcus Backey clogging up the lanes on defense. An instant return to its usual spot in the state playoffs will be tough. Best player Shawn Williams (59 tackles, 24 receptions) is gone to Georgia. Early County has not suffered consecutive losing seasons since Ed Pilcher’s first year in Baxley in 1986.
Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes
2008 record: 11-3, 5-2 (third in region)

Outlook: With the majority of their starters returning, the Purple Hurricanes are a state contender again. Still, head coach Robby Pruitt will have to incorporate many young kids into the lineup and replace a superstar in Jemea Thomas, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution defensive player of the year. Thomas averaged 10 tackles a game and rushed for 518 yards on 59 carries. Playmakers remain in RB/WR Trenton Pruitt (20 touchdowns last year, committed to Vanderbilt) and FB Nick Williams (1,303 yards rushing, 15 touchdowns). The biggest question mark may be dual-threat sophomore quarterback Caleb Nobles. If Nobles can prove he can handle the starting job after the departure of Brad Taylor (1,032 yards passing in 10 games), there’s a chance for another deep playoff run.
Mitchell County Eagles
2008 record: 4-6, 3-4 (fifth in region)

Outlook: Mitchell County has its head coach figured out, as Dondrail Pickens has the job to himself now. Pinkins is a former quarterback at South Carolina who starred at Mitchell County when the school was Mitchell-Baker. He shared the coaching duties last season with Derrick Silas. The 2009 Eagles will be fast but small. Anthony Brown (5 feet 11, 250 pounds) will be a key contributor on the offensive and defensive lines and is perhaps the team MVP. Speedy receivers Kentavious Silas and Justin Scott will help to spread the field. Pederian Wesley will try to help ease the loss of running back Kyran Stewart.
Thomasville Bulldogs
2008 record: 7-5, 6-1 (second in region)
Playoffs: Lost to Dublin 21-14 in the second round

Outlook: Thomasville has all the markings of a state contender, at least on paper – two-thirds of its starters returning from a top team and some star power. Fred Holton, a safety, has committed to Georgia Tech. RB Jeffrey Dyson was first-team all-region last season. So was Charles Hayes as a defensive back. He’s also one of the state’s fastest quarterbacks, scored eight touchdowns last season on runs of longer than 10 yards and averaged 6.5 yards per carry. LB Lanorris Christopher (19 tackles for loss last season) is back on what should be one of the best defenses in Class AA. Thomasville also lost some big-name players, such as LB Tyrone Williams, the region defensive player of the year who also rushed for 760 yards. But any good team is going to graduate good players. Thomasville has at least semifinal talent, but the question is whether it will win a tight playoff game, like those that beat the Bulldogs in 2008 (Dublin) and 2007 (Lovett).
Region Preview: 2-AA:
What it is: Region 2-AA is a nine-team region of schools in southeast Georgia, with about half along the Georgia coast. A full round-robin determines the four playoff teams. Region power Charlton County has won three state titles this decade, but the 2-AA teams were 0-4 in the state playoffs in 2008.

Outlook: Appling is coming off a historic year – its first region title since 2000 and first victory against Charlton County, which was ranked No. 2 at the time. But that was a senior-laden team, and nobody in the region is losing more top players. Gone are the Pirates’ top two quarterbacks and 1,000-yard rusher Javon James, the region player of the year. Appling’s defense also took some major graduation losses, including LB Jarrett Clemons, the region defensive player of the year. Appling allowed only nine points per game last season and allowed only one team, Cook in the playoffs, to score more than two touchdowns. Best returning players are DL Dale Howard (first team all-region), LB Zach Griffis (57 tackles, four interceptions) and DB Tate Carter (22 tackles, three interceptions).
Benedictine Cadets
2008 record: 5-5, 3-5 (sixth in region)

Outlook: Benedictine promoted alumnus Mark Stroud, its defensive coordinator since 2006, to replace the retiring Bob Herndon. The offense should be pretty good with returning starters Alex Hunt at quarterback and first-team all-region RB John Williams (1,103 yards rushing, 22 touchdowns). Hunt also was an all-region defensive back and the region’s best punter. The defense allowed 28 points per game last season (and even allowed 50 in one of Benedictine’s victories). There must be significant improvement there to have a winning season or playoff berth.
Brantley County Herons
2008 record: 2-8, 1-7 (eight in region)

Outlook: Brantley County had seven all-region players (first or second team) in 2008, and all but one return. That includes QB Devon Blankenship. Success will depend more heavily on the development of the Herons’ defense, which allowed more than 30 points per game. OL/DL Charles Blankenship, OL/DL Mikel Duenas and OL/DL Cameron Hammit are expected to lead the Herons’ efforts up front on both sides of the ball. This should be one of the most improved teams in the region, but the playoffs are a long shot because the Herons were not competitive against the region’s top four in 2008.
Charlton County Indians

Outlook: One of Georgia’s best poor-mouthing coaches is Charlton County’s Rich McWhorter, who is seeking his 20th consecutive winning season. He’s been in rare form this summer: “We have about 58 players. That’s down. We usually have about 80. Seems like everyone who graduated last year was a defensive player, so the defensive side of the ball we’re really concerned about. There’s only three running backs in the program. One got hurt in a car wreck and is out for the year. Another one’s got shoulder problems. The other is a freshman.” But there might be some reason for legitimate concern. Charlton lost in the first round under McWhorter for the first time, and it was by a 39-7 score. Charlton is one of the smallest schools in Class AA now and will return to Class A in 2010, so numbers are down, and Charlton lacks the usual depth. McWhorter also figures this could be his first team without a top Division I-A prospect. Otherwise, no one bets against Charlton in a region setting. The team returns a strong core on offense, featuring a formidable offensive line and key skill-position players including sophomore RB Tre Hamilton (972 rushing yards, 14 TDs), TE Kesean Peterson (263 receiving yards, five TDs) and junior QB Chris Milton (1,049 Yds, 18 total TDs). On defense, only three starters are back. DL Suave Bolden is a McWhorter favorite.
Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets
2008 record: 1-9, 0-8 (ninth in region)
Average record this decade: 3-7
Coach: Jason McBride (1-9 in one season)
Offense: Multiple I (coordinator: T.J. Mercer)
Defense: 4-3 (coordinator: Roger Metts)

Outlook: In his first season, promoted assistant coach Jason McBride saw his team win its opener and then lose nine straight, going winless in region play. The scores were not pretty, as Jeff Davis was within a touchdown of only one opponent during the skid. The team will be young again and be hard-pressed to improve more than a victory or two. The best players must go both ways. They include OL/DL Colby Jowers and FB/LB Kaleb LaRoche. Jowers was Jeff Davis’ only all-region performer last season.
Long County Blue Tide
2008 record: 4-6, 2-6 (seventh in region)
Average record this decade: 2-8

Outlook: Don’t judge a coach on his won-lost record. Kyle Wilson took over a program in 2005 that had never won a game. He’s gone 2-8, 2-8, 4-6 and 4-6. In 2008, Long won every close game and got flattened in the other six simply because it was overmatched. This is a fun team operating out of the spread. Back are second-team all-region QB Jake Durham (2,183 passing yards, 21 TDs), WR/QB Justin Boyd (584 receiving yards, 11 total TDs) and WR/DB Donte Brown (323 receiving yards, three TDs), so points will be scored. Long County beat Camden County 38-20 in a passing league game this summer, for what it’s worth. The defense will do what it can, but this is a unit that gave up more than 40 points most of the time. It will be tough improving or even maintaining the level of 4-6 for this small school that re-started football in 2002, but with QB Boyd and company, it will be fun trying.
McIntosh County Academy Buccaneers
2008 record: 9-2, 7-1 (tied for first in region)
Playoffs: Lost to Thomasville 20-7 in the first round
Average record this decade: 8-4

Outlook: MCA is looking for its sixth consecutive playoff appearance under Robby Robinson and seeks to expand upon a dominant ground game. First-team all-region RB Darries Robinson (992 yards, 11 touchdowns) returns. So does MCA’s best offensive lineman, Andre Thomas, a first-team all-region player. Look for FB Richie Austin (214 yards) to play a major role. The team rushed for nearly 2,000 yards last season. On defense, the Buccaneers lost LB Sequan Stanley, the region co-defensive player of the year with Appling County’s Jarrett Clemons. But the front seven should be pretty solid with DL/OL Blake Riley, DL T.J. Jenkins and LB Jacob Caldwell. It looks like a typical MCA team for a coach who has won three region titles in five years.
Pierce County Bears
2008 record: 4-6, 4-4 (fifth in region)

Outlook: Coach Mike Woodard’s three-year record of 18-13 is a good effort when one considers he took over a program that had gone 1-9 consecutively. The 2008 season was a setback, but the Bears were just a few plays from a playoff berth. The Bears are returning a strong core of players offensively that includes junior QB Jake Graham and senior RB Jaelen Smiley. Defensively, the Bears will have to retool after losing key players on the line. There is the issue of replacing the best player from 2008, Kris Durr, who was first team all-region at defensive back, second team at running back and the special teams player of the year. Pierce will rely on two-way players such as WR/DB Obie Foreman and RB/LB Derrail Moore to provide that kind of versatility. Moore rushed for 330 yards (11 yards per carry) while compiling 32 tackles and forcing three fumbles defensively last season.
Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors
2008 record: 7-4, 5-3 (fourth in region)
Playoffs: Lost to Brooks County 41-13 in the first round

Outlook: Tattnall County is a program on the rise under third-year coach Jeff Kaiser. The 7-4 finish was the school’s first winning record since 1997. Kaiser switched from a Wing-T to a spread last year, and with a year’s experience in the system, eight starters back and first-team all-region QB Quaysean Davis, the offense should fly in 2009. Davis rushed for 900 yards and threw for 750. The top loss was Brandon Harton (1,200-yard rusher). The heir is probably Shayon Guest, a junior who started as a freshman in 2007 but was injured much of 2008. Four of five offensive line starters are back, though there’s little depth at the position. On defense, first-team all-region LB Dwight Stoutamire is tough. The loss of both defensive tackles is the major concern. The secondary is a strength.
