It is the last week of the regular season but the playoff picture remains a fight to the finish in every classification across state, including the Class AA’s field. Class AA has the most seeds clinched out of any of the other five classifications (A-Public and A-Private do power rankings) but there is still plenty to watch for. Here is the breakdown of all the scenarios to look for this weekend.
Region 1 (Faces Region 4 Round 1)
Brooks County clinched the No. 1 seed, Fitzgerald owns the No. 2 seed and Early County will enter the playoffs as the third seed. Pelham (2-3) can clinch the fourth seed with a win over Berrien (1-4). If Berrien defeats Pelham and Seminole County (1-4) defeats Fitzgerald then Berrien, Pelham and Seminole County will be in a three-way tie at 2-4. If Seminole County loses and Berrien beats Pelham, then Berrien will take the fourth seed. Thomasville (1-4) can also add to a 2-4 log jam at with a win at Early County. Thomasville would only own the tiebreaker over Seminole County.
Region 4
Lamar County (4-0) and Macon County (4-0) square off in a true region championship Friday night. The winner will take the top seed and the loser will take the second seed. Putnam County (2-2) is guaranteed the No. 3 seed. Monticello (1-3) and Northeast Macon (1-3) play for the fourth seed.
Region 2 (Faces Region 3 Round 1)
Benedictine is the No. 1 seed and Bryan County (5-1) can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win against visiting Vidalia (4-2) on Friday. If Vidalia wins, it will take the No. 2 seed and Bryan County will take the No. 3. Bacon County (3-3) hosts McIntosh County Academy (3-3) with a playoff berth on the line. The winner will take the No. 4 seed unless McIntosh County Academy wins and Vidalia drops to 4-3 with a loss to Bryan County. That would give McIntosh County Academy the No. 3 seed and Vidalia would drop to the No. 4 since it lost to McIntosh County 15-14 this season.
Region 3
Jefferson County is the No. 1 seed and Screven County already clinched the No. 2 seed. Swainsboro (3-2) and Metter (3-2) are guaranteed the final two playoff spots because they both beat Dublin (2-3) who is next in the standings. A Metter loss would guarantee Swainsboro the No. 3 seed regardless of the outcome. Metter would need a win over Screven County and a Swainsboro loss to Jefferson County to take the No. 3 seed.
Region 5 (Faces Region 8 Round 1)
Heard County is the Region 5 champion and top seed and Manchester owns the No. 2 seed. The third and fourth seed will come down to Bowdon (2-2) and Bremen (2-2) with Chattahoochee County (1-3) needing a lot of help to try and grab the fourth seed. Bowdon is in the driver’s seat after defeating Bremen last week and closes the season at Chattahoochee County. A Bowdon win would crown Bowdon the No. 3 seed and Bremen would take the No. 4 seed regardless of its outcome with Heard County as Chattahoochee County would drop to 1-4. A Bremen (2-2) win over Heard County and a Bowdon (2-2) loss to Chattahoochee County (1-3) would give Bremen the No. 3 seed at 3-2 and Chattahoochee County would take the No. 4 at 2-3 with the tie breaker over Bowdon. If Chattahoochee County (1-3) beats Bowdon (2-2) and Bremen (2-2) loses to Heard County then it would force a three-way tie at 2-3.
Region 8
Rabun County already clinched the top seed regardless of its trip to Greene County. Union County (4-1) visits Washington-Wilkes (4-1) for the No.2 seed and the loser will drop to No. 3. Greene County (3-2) is guaranteed the fourth seed.
Region 6 (Faces Region 7 Round 1)
Greater Atlanta Christian (6-0) and Wesleyan (5-1) play for the top seed in Region 6. Greater Atlanta Christian is guaranteed at least the No. 2 seed but Wesleyan is not. Lovett (5-2) beat Wesleyan and finished its season last Friday. Pace Academy (4-2) owns the tiebreaker over Lovett but lost to Wesleyan. If Wesleyan wins, the Wolves take No. 1 and GAC takes No. 2. There are only two more scenarios. If Wesleyan loses and Pace Academy beats B.E.S.T. Academy, then there is a three-way tie between Pace, Lovett and Wesleyan at 5-2. If Wesleyan loses and Pace Academy loses to B.E.S.T., then Lovett would take No. 2, Wesleyan would take No. 3 and Pace would take No. 4.
Region 7
Model already finished its season and waits at 5-1 with its lone loss coming to Darlington. Darlington (5-0) can clinch the No. 1 seed with a win over Chattooga (4-1) and Model would take the No. 2 seed, while Chattooga grabbed No. 3. A Darlington loss would complicate everything, however. If Chattooga beats Darlington, then that forces a three-way tie with Model, Darlington and Chattooga at 5-1. The winner of Dade County (2-3) and visiting Gordon Lee (2-3) automatically clinches the No. 4 seed.
