Marietta ran away with last year’s AAAAAA state championship winning by 94 points and posting an impressive average time of 17:00.68. The Blue Devils start the year at No. 1, returning their top four runners and five of their top six (Carlos Torres, Ben Patterson, KhayVonn Benson, Hayden Tullos, and David Savic). Torres placed third overall at the state meet last year. They kick off their season this weekend at the Fleet Feet Savannah Kickoff. The 2014 individual champion Davis Stockwell from Lakeside Dekalb will seek to win his second title in his final season.
In Class AAAAA, Flowery Branch tops the poll after placing second at last year’s state meet. The Falcons finished just seven points behind state champion Clarkston, who starts 2015 ranked No. 2. Flowery Branch brings back their top two runners from a year ago Jake Shewbert and Grant O’Callaghan. Shewbert finished fourth in the state in 2014. The team had an impressive opening meet last weekend placing first in the Pickens Preview with an average time of 17:17.
A familiar team sits at No. 1 in Class AAAA. St. Pius is coming off of their fifth straight state title last season and their eighth overall. This was their first title in Class AAAA after making the jump from Class AAA. Although they lost their top three runners from a year ago, they look to retool as they have in the past. They will look to George Meyer and Daniel Grosch to lead the team. Both place in the top 20 individually at the state meet last year. St. Pius will start their season this weekend at the Battle of Atlanta in Hampton, Georgia.
The AAA defending state champion Blessed Trinity opens the season at No. 1. The Titans return their top three runners Ben McCoy, Robby Gipson, and Leo Pryor. Each of them finished in the top 15 individually at the state meet. In their opening meet of this year’s season, they placed first at the Mercy Invitational with an average time of 18:33. East Jackson’s Chase and Chandler Kennedy both return for their junior seasons. They placed first and second respectively at the state meet last year.
Fresh off of their state title a season ago and ninth since 2000, Wesleyan debuts as the No. 1 team in Class AA. The team returns all five of their top runners from 2014, including Henry Collins, Bailey Renfroe, Joey Gaddis, Mikey Olson, and Clay Patrick. Collins placed third individually at the state meet. The Wolves begin their season this weekend on their home turf at the Wesleyan Invitational.
In Class A-Private, Landmark Christian begins the season at No. 1. The team finished in fifth place at last year’s state meet and return all six of their top runners, including Austin Taylor, Seth Cruver, Kermit Jackson, Mark Humphries, Micah Burdette, and Daniel Wilson. Defending state champion Hebron Christian Academy debuts at No. 8.
Last season’s state runner-up Towns County starts the season at No. 1 in Class A-Public. The Indians finished just four points behind Jenkins County, which begins the 2015 season ranked No. 2. Towns returns all seven of their top runners, including Tyler Grimsley, Marshall Ledford, Thomas Mitchell, Gavin Langelier, Kaine Hoffman, Austin Watson, and Alejandro Lemus. Grimsley placed ninth overall at last year’s state meet. Irving Rendon from Morris Innovative High School, last year’s individual state champion, will be back to defend his title.
